On a vibrant Saturday, May 18, 2024, Nashville was abuzz with anticipation for the 17th Annual Literary Luncheon, a captivating event organized by the Nashville chapter of Les Gemmes. The much-awaited literary engagement lived up to its reputation, attracting a sold-out crowd at the city’s elegant Music City Center’s Davidson Ballroom.
The highlight of this literary feat was the keynote address by bestselling author ReShonda Tate. The Texas native is widely recognized for her captivating storytelling and her significant contributions to African American Literature. She captured the audience’s imagination with discussions around her latest release, “The Queen of Sugar Hill.” This compelling narrative chronicles the life story of the iconic Hattie McDaniel, the first Black personality to be awarded an Academy Award. Each attendee at the luncheon was presented with an autographed copy of this transformative piece of literature.
Organized with a vision, the classy luncheon served a noble cause. The Event raised funds for the Lighting the Path for Girls program spearheaded by Les Gemmes. The initiative, dedicated to supporting young Black women in their journey of self-discovery and success, provides scholarships, enriching mentorship, and other educational experiences.
Adding a dash of vibrancy to the literary engagement, former members from the renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers, including Grammy-nominated musical artist Kimberly Fleming and the Friends of Fisk, enthralled the audience with their soulful renditions. The evening was also graced by the energetic performance by the Sankofa African Dancers. Jadyn Marshall, the prodigious 2024 Nashville Poet Laureate, delighted the audience by sharing some of her compelling works.
Guests also enjoyed a unique shopping experience at the event. A total of thirty-seven Black entrepreneurs, businesses, and authors showcased their goods for the enthusiastic attendees. Artistically reflecting the rich African heritage, many of the attendees chose to embrace the event’s tradition by dressing in African attire.
The event was chaired by the dynamic Karen Johnson, Nashville Davidson County Register of Deeds, and a published author. Her recent op-ed piece regarding the historical connection between Nashville and Hattie McDaniel, whose story features in ReShonda’s new book, added a layer of depth to the event’s literary focus.
All in all, the 17th Annual Literary Luncheon culminated in a grand celebration of African American history, literature, and culture, while creating a foundation of support for the young Black women of Nashville. Undoubtedly, the heartwarming event reiterated Les Gemmes’ commitment to empowering the community, igniting a sense of passion and purpose in their journey towards success.
