Alzheimer’s Association Unveils the 2024 Facts and Figures Report

The Alzheimer’s Association released its annual report titled ‘Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures’ on March 20th, 2024. This significant report offers an all-encompassing breakdown of the most recent statistics and information related to Alzheimer’s disease, including prevalence, incidence, mortality rates, available dementia care workforce, and care cost. The date emphasized the vast impact of this disease not only on a national scale but also on the local level in Tennessee.

Key Findings of the Report

The report indicates that 129,200 residents, aged 65 and above, are living with Alzheimer’s dementia in Tennessee. This sheds light on the extent of the burden of Alzheimer’s caregiving impacting local communities. Cost implications of caregiving, hours dedicated to caregiving, the economic impact arising from caregiving, and the significant healthcare hurdles faced by dementia caregivers in Tennessee are some of the highlighted aspects.

Furthermore, the report puts a spotlight on a critical issue experienced nationwide; there is a significant shortages in the dementia care workforce, which compromises the care delivered to patients living with Alzheimer’s disease.

‘Mapping a Better Future for Dementia Care Navigation’

In addition to the main report, an accompanying special report titled ‘Mapping a Better Future for Dementia Care Navigation’ has also been released. It marks the supplementary hurdles faced by dementia caregivers across the country as they attempt to navigate the existing healthcare system. The special report is based on a survey conducted amongst national caregivers.

According to the survey, 70% of caregivers responded that coordinating care for a family member with dementia could be stressful. Over half (53%) pinpointed that navigating healthcare was challenging. Moreover, a majority of caregivers (two in three) had reported trouble in finding resources and support for their own caregiving needs.
