Exploring Women’s History in Nashville

Various museums and sites around Nashville are ready to serve as a historical journey, an educational adventure into significant milestones achieved by women in this city. Notable sites include The Nashville Public Library and The Tennessee State Museum.

The Nashville Public Library

Walking through the historical corridors of The Nashville Public Library, you’ll stumble upon the Votes for Women Room—an area specially designated to honor the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment that gave women the right to vote back in 1920.

The Tennessee State Museum

The Tennessee State Museum is yet another educational exploration that houses information on women who have significantly impacted Tennessee’s history. Various exhibits such as Forging a Nation Gallery, Civil War and Reconstruction Gallery, Change and Challenge Gallery, and Tennessee Transforms Gallery each hold stories of extraordinary women like Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, and NASA astronaut Dr. Margaret Rhea Seddon. The museum is also offering Women’s History Month tours on Saturdays in March.

Walls for Women: Nashville Murals

Artistic expressions dedicated to the centenary of women’s suffrage are sprinkled all over Tennessee. In 2020, Nashville was decorated with several murals designed by an all women’s group of muralists. These grand paintings are a visual tribute to the remarkable journey of women’s rights.

Events Celebrating Women in Nashville

A multitude of events are scheduled to celebrate Women’s History Month in Nashville. These events range from enlightening panel discussions to empowering networking events.

Some noteworthy events include An evening with Carole and Jeffery Boston Weatherford at the downtown library branch where the mother-son duo shares their writings and illustrations of women’s significant roles globally, Power Hour Nashville, which is a speed-mentoring experience for young girls, and Women in Tennessee Whiskey Brunch—a panel discussion and celebratory brunch around the role of women in the Tennessee whiskey world.

Celebrating Women’s Contributions in Music

Nashville also celebrates the monumental contributions of women in the music industry. Events like Alias Chamber Ensemble and Music by Women in the Early 1900s commemorate history with melodies composed by women. These provide an insight into the rich and diverse musical expressions by women over the years.

There’s a great deal to discover about the magnificent women who had a significant hand in Tennessee history and continue to make their presence felt even today.
