Nashville Music News: A Weekend Filled with Tributes and Tunes
Hey there, Music City! As we roll into another weekend, there’s plenty buzzing in the air that every music lover in Nashville should know about. From heartfelt tributes to exciting new releases, the scene is alive and kicking. Let’s dive into the five things you don’t want to miss this weekend!
Remembering DJ Svnny D
Nashville’s vibrant hip-hop community is grieving the loss of a true gem, Deandre Haynes, affectionately known as DJ Svnny D. To honor his life and support his family, a special celebration called Svnny Fest is happening tonight, Friday, September 13, at La Danse (located at 142 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.). This is not just a tribute; it’s a music jam packed with more than a dozen talented MCs ready to hit the stage. Expect to see performances from artists like Meme the Goat, 615 Exclusive, Brian Brown, Blvck Wizzle, and Gee Slab. The party kicks off at 9 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m., so be sure to grab your cover at the door for $20. While you’re there, feel free to show your support with any additional donations to help the family.
Insights from the Greater Nashville Music Census
For all of you deeply entrenched in the Nashville music scene, the findings from the Greater Nashville Music Census have just been made public, and they’re packed with valuable information. This survey, which gathered input from over 4,000 music industry folks, shines a spotlight on some serious challenges. For example, it found that 30% of Davidson County respondents struggle with paying their rent or mortgage, quite a bit higher than the 20% in surrounding areas. Notably, a staggering 83% expressed worries about inconsistent pay, and 65% reported a lack of benefits as a significant issue. This survey underscores the trials many face as they strive to make a living in Music City.
Friday the 13th Fun with D. Striker
Now, if you’re looking for a different kind of fun, head over to the Low Volume Lounge at Eastside Bowl tonight at 8 p.m. for a special Friday the 13th event! Nashville’s own D. Striker, the alter ego of music biz veteran Jeff Meltesen, is hosting a special release party for his latest edition of the golden-hued RR zine. It’s been a long-standing tradition that dates back to 1998! Joining him on stage are The Criminal Kind and the beloved local group Hands Down Eugene, who are reuniting for their first show in five years. Admission is free, so swing by and tip generously!
New Music Alert: Robyn Hitchcock
Mark your calendars because today also brings a special treat for fans of Robyn Hitchcock. He’s releasing 1967: Vacations in the Past, the companion album to his recent memoir. If you’re eager to catch him live, he’ll be popping into Grimey’s on Wednesday, September 18, at 4 p.m. for a short performance and book signing. To ensure your spot, make sure to preorder the book and vinyl LP from Grimey’s and get a wristband. Keep an eye on their Instagram for all the details!
A Nod to AmericanaFest
And if all that wasn’t enough, fans of Americana music should be excited because AmericanaFest kicks off next Tuesday, September 17. As always, there will be tons of related events popping up around town. Keep your ears to the ground because there are bound to be surprises worth catching!
Well, there you have it! It’s a jam-packed weekend of celebration, music, and important discussions here in Nashville. Whatever you choose to do, have a blast!
