Nashville Residents Rally Against New Natural Gas Power Plants
Nashville, Tenn. – This past Saturday, a vibrant coalition of local groups gathered in Centennial Park to voice their strong opposition to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) plans for new natural gas power plants. The protest saw participation from organizations such as the local chapter of the Sierra Club, Sunrise Movement Nashville, and Preserve Cheatham County. With a focus on environmental concerns, community members united to express their discontent over TVA’s proposal, which includes the construction of multiple new natural gas or methane power plants across seven states.
The Proposal and Public Backlash

“When TVA says that they’re raising our rates, we don’t know why they’re raising the rates, other than for the gas build-out. I would prefer to see this for renewables,” expressed Tracy O’Neill, a representative from Preserve Cheatham County. Neal from Sunrise Movement Nashville pointed out that the anticipated surge in power consumption correlated with Tennessee’s growing population hasn’t materialized as TVA suggested. “By their own metrics… there isn’t a huge explosion of growth of how much power people are using. So, you’re building this for something that you acknowledge isn’t actually happening,” Neal argued, raising valid concerns about the necessity of these new plants.
TVA’s Response to Concerns
In response to the protest and outcry, a TVA spokesperson emphasized that the planning process for these plants is not yet finalized. They assured the public that an extensive period for public input is already underway, having begun with several meetings in Cheatham County. The spokesperson indicated that TVA will be revealing their 2025 long-term plans for energy development and assessing environmental impacts shortly.
