Electric Scooters in Nashville: New Curfew Proposal by Rideshare Drivers

Nashville, Tennessee, is buzzing with a new discussion around electric scooters that are seen zipping around town. Rideshare drivers are stepping up to express their concerns about safety, particularly when the sun goes down. They are proposing a 9 p.m. curfew on electric scooters to help keep the roads safer, especially late at night.

Safety First: Rideshare Drivers Share Their Concerns

Uber driver, Arkangelo Wilson, is one of the voices representing this group of rideshare drivers. He believes that while it’s great to see people using scooters, there are significant issues that need addressing. “We want them to stop at least by 9 p.m.,” Wilson explains. “There has to be a limit… to stop all the scooters by then.” His concern lies in the behavior of some scooter riders who don’t seem to pay attention to traffic laws. Wilson emphasizes that it’s not just a suggestion; it’s a matter of safety.

“It’s really dangerous, especially at night when the roads are dark and people are drinking,” he adds. Wilson also pointed out the responsibility rideshare drivers carry. “I would be liable if someone gets hurt because they weren’t following the rules, which is why we feel strongly about this curfew.” It’s clear that the issue has become a pressing matter for those who share the road with these two-wheeled travelers.

City Council Takes Notice

In response to these concerns, a conversation with Metro Councilman Jacob Kupin shed light on what the city plans to do. When asked about the proposed curfew, Kupin acknowledged the safety issues surrounding scooter use. “As recently as last week, I advocated at the TLC for increased enforcement for riders on the sidewalk,” he said, recognizing that not all scooter riders are using them safely or appropriately.

Kupin pointed out an essential fact: scooters are not intended to be ridden on sidewalks. He shared some exciting news regarding ongoing efforts by the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT) to make improvements. “We are in the process of installing corrals for scooters,” he noted. These corrals will help keep scooters organized and off sidewalks, making it safer for pedestrians as well. “We are also trying to look out for the safety of our community members,” he continued.

Finding a Balance

While Councilman Kupin agrees with the need for safety improvements, he also sees the potential benefits of scooters as a mode of transport. “They can be an asset to the city as another way to get around,” he remarked. It’s a tricky balance to strike; ensuring that everyone can enjoy the convenience of scooters while keeping roads safe for all users.

The 9 p.m. curfew is not simply about restricting fun but about prioritizing the safety and well-being of Nashville residents. As more people embrace electric scooters, the dialogue around responsible usage and safety regulations is becoming increasingly significant. The city is listening, and changes may soon be on the horizon.

In this vibrant city, as more stories unfold each day, the collaboration between rideshare drivers, city officials, and scooter riders will play a crucial role in shaping Nashville’s future. It remains to be seen how this proposed curfew will be received, but one thing is clear: the safety of everyone on the road is a priority.
