After Strokes, Beloved 44-Year Employee Returns to Visit Friedman’s

Nashville, Tennessee – In the heart of middle Tennessee, there’s a common thread running among the long-established family-owned businesses; an exceptionally loyal and committed staff. As one of Nashville’s oldest businesses, Friedman’s Army Navy Outdoor Store, prepares to close its doors after 75 years of operation, there is a sense of both an end and a beginning taking place.

The Magic of Friedman’s

Owner Frank Friedman and veteran employee Linda Wright recall the keys to the business’s longevity. Frank explains, “It’s a unique mix of goods we offer.” Linda promptly added, “We haven’t altered our ways or our mindset. We’re a bit old school and our customers value that.“

At Friedman’s, it’s akin to a corner tavern, where dedicated customers make regular visits in what Linda describes as “the corner bar of retail.”

Few who have a passion for fishing in Nashville have not found themselves at the counter with Patsy Curtis, a top fixture at Friedman’s for about 45 years. Even Linda gushes about her, saying, “Patsy is a people person; it’s clear as day. She loves to engage in conversations.“

Patsy’s Journey

However, Patsy has not been present at the counter for some time now. Last fall, she endured a significant health scare, suffering from three strokes in just a week. “It was devastating, I felt awful for her,” Linda remembers. “I miss our little talks. We are incredibly close.“

An arduous journey of recovery followed for Patsy, who is not one to stay idle. She has been undergoing therapy and gaining strength steadily.

For Patsy, however, the most challenging aspect is being away from Friedman’s during this time of transition. Frank reflected, “We’re getting old, and the people here are irreplaceable. It’s just our time now.” “I would love to see my customers who have allowed me to help them over the years,” Patsy chimed in. “I’ll still be in the wheelchair, but I can still talk.”

A Touching Reunion

After several months of absence, Patsy was ready to pay a visit to Friedman’s. As she entered the store, the atmosphere was electrifying. There was an air of excitement and emotion as Linda and the customers warmly welcomed her into the premises. Like always, the front door of Friedman’s was wide open for Patsy.

It seemed as if no time had passed at all, and her presence brought a sense of joy and familiarity to all, especially to her friends; “If anyone can pull through this, she will,” affirmed Linda. “She’s so determined. I told her, ‘You’ll get through this. I know you will.'”

This bittersweet reunion via a visit by Patsy to Friedman’s, has today shown us yet again the resilience of the human spirit, friendship, unity, and indefatigable determination.
