Nashville High Schoolers Take a Stand for Better Transportation

Nashville, Tenn. is buzzing with excitement as a group of determined high school students is stepping up to tackle one of the city’s pressing issues: transportation. That’s right! Instead of waiting for city officials to come up with solutions, students from McGavock High School decided to take matters into their own hands after witnessing firsthand the struggles their friends and classmates faced getting to and from school.

From Concern to Action

It all began back in April when a few students noticed how challenging it was for some of their classmates to navigate the roads without proper sidewalks and efficient bus routes. “It motivated us to speak further on the issue and talk about it,” shared Isabela Tolentino, a passionate student who felt the weight of this situation.

On a special day called “Youth in Local Government,” the students presented their concerns to city council members. They highlighted quite a few significant issues, such as areas where they had to walk dangerously on roads without any sidewalks, the inconvenient bus schedules that often left students stranded, and bus stops that were practically unreachable. Their voices were heard loud and clear.

Working Together for Change

On a recent day filled with hope and anticipation, these young advocates had a meeting with local councilors, the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT), WeGo transit officials, and representatives from the mayor’s office. Excitingly, council members assured the students that many of their transportation concerns could be resolved if a forthcoming transit referendum passes.

The proposed improvement plan aims to dramatically transform the transportation landscape in Nashville by reducing traffic, repairing sidewalks, and expanding bus routes. The students were grateful for the attention their issue received, which is something they didn’t take for granted. “I feel like they really listened to us and our problems and to, like, I love how they didn’t just cast us aside,” Tolentino added with genuine appreciation.

The Road Ahead

While the students were hopeful about the potential changes, they recognized that not everything depends on the success of the referendum. Leslie Castillo, another passionate student, stated, “Even if this referendum fails, we’re still inspired to push on the issues that really affect us. That’s where we come in as the younger generation and have to take over, and hopefully, our generation takes it more seriously.” It’s clear that their drive to advocate for better transportation will not falter easily.

A Vote for the Future

Funding for the proposed improvements would come from a half-cent tax, which Nashville voters will have the chance to consider in the upcoming November polls. This measure could be a game-changer for many students and residents who face transportation challenges daily.
