Nashville, a city known for its vibrant culture and strong sense of community, is mourning the passing of one of its esteemed citizens, Bill Freeman, who died on Sunday at the age of 73. His death is currently under investigation as a suspected suicide. Freeman was a well-respected property developer, a past mayoral candidate, and a committed Democratic Party advocate. His impact on the community was felt far and wide, earning him a place in the hearts of many.
Bill Freeman’s legacy extends beyond his remarkable business achievements. His son, State Representative Bob Freeman, spoke highly of his father’s unwavering dedication to family. Describing him as a fearless advocate for the issues that mattered most, Bob shared, “His family always came first. Especially my mom, Babs.” Bill met Babs Tinsley during their elementary school days in Donelson, Tennessee—a testament to the enduring love and devotion he embodied throughout his life.
“He instilled in me and my brothers, Harvey and Mike, the values of being loving husbands and devoted fathers, and we carry those lessons with us today,” Bob expressed. The love that Bill and Babs shared was evident to all who knew them, and it shaped every interaction he had in both his personal and professional life.
Co-founding Freeman Webb Co. in 1979 was just the beginning of Bill Freeman’s journey into real estate. The company, which he established with Jimmy Webb, is now a multifamily real estate investment and management firm that manages over 18,000 rental homes and apartments across multiple states, including Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Alabama. Noteworthy is Freeman Webb’s commitment to accepting low-income Section 8 housing vouchers, demonstrating Bill’s belief in providing affordable housing options for those in need.
In his own words, the company rented “to the people who keep Nashville running,” emphasizing that his heart was always aimed towards enhancing the community’s well-being.
The news of Freeman’s passing drew heartfelt responses from local leaders. Nashville’s Mayor Freddie O’Connell shared a touching tribute, stating, “Bill was many things—a real estate visionary, mayoral candidate, pilot, media magnate, staunch Democrat—and friend. Our city, state, and nation are better for his tenacity and commitment.” Numerous friends, including former Vice President Al Gore, echoed these sentiments, recognizing Bill’s devotion to ensuring a thriving Nashville for all its residents.
Freeman’s extensive service to the community was notable. He served on multiple boards, including the Metro Nashville Airport Authority Board for eight years and participated in various charitable organizations, such as the Nashville Davidson County Mental Health and Veterans Assistance Foundation. In 2023, he passed the reins of Freeman Webb to his son Bob after a successful career, often expressing his excitement about traveling more and spending quality time with his grandchildren when he retired.
The outpouring of grief from the community has been palpable. Many community leaders highlighted Freeman’s commitment to service and his deep love for his family. Davidson County Register of Deeds Karen Johnson described him as “a smart, well-grounded businessman” and a “giant” among local civic-minded leaders
Alongside his immediate family, Freeman is survived by his beloved wife and three sons—Harvey, Mike, and Bob. His funeral will take place at Hermitage Memorial Gardens this Friday at 11 a.m., and while the service is private, a celebration of life will be held at a future date, giving the community a chance to honor the remarkable man he was.
Bill Freeman’s passing leaves a substantial void in Nashville’s community, one that will be deeply felt. In his own way, he fostered a big heart and a spirit of giving that will continue to inspire others.
