Celebrating the Career and Retirement of Nutrition Advocate and Business Owner, Nan Allison

Nan Allison, MS, RDN, LDN, has dedicated over 37 years to the field of nutrition, establishing herself as a leading advocate for client-centered, policy-driven, and empowering nutrition practices. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and pursued a Master’s in Nutrition from Tufts University. Nan completed her dietetic internship at the Frances Stern Nutrition Center within Tufts New England Medical Center on a scholarship from the state of Tennessee Department of Health. There she honed her expertise in medical nutrition therapy and the study of food habits and beliefs. Furthering her commitment to integrative health, she studied Integrated Healing and Counseling at the Estuary’s School of Healing Arts in Nashville.

In 1988, Nan founded with Carol Beck, Allison and Beck Nutrition Consultants, Nashville’s first outpatient nutrition practice dedicated to a whole-person, non-diet approach. Their vision was to provide evidence-based nutrition guidance tailored to each individual’s unique needs and goals. Over the years, her commitment to empowering clients to cultivate sustainable, intuitive relationships with food has remained at the core of the company’s philosophy. Under her leadership, the practice became a trusted resource for nutrition education, advocacy, and support.

Beyond her private practice, Nan has been an outspoken advocate for nutrition policy. Her dedication to the profession earned her The Tennessee Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics  1998 Young Dietitian of the Year, 2002 Dietitian of the Year and a 2020 nomination for the Nashville Athena Award by the Nashville Women’s Breakfast Club, recognizing her leadership and impact in advancing women in business and healthcare.

Nan co-authored Full & Fulfilled: The Science of Eating to Your Soul’s Satisfaction with Carol Beck. This book provides readers with a pathway to end struggles with eating habits by fostering self-compassion and intuitive eating. Through practical instructions, guided reflections, and worksheets, it helps individuals interpret their body’s signals and understand how these cues connect to emotional and spiritual needs. The aim is to empower individuals to break free from the cycle of dieting and self-sabotage, cultivating a healthy, fulfilling relationship with food.

As Nan transitions into retirement, her legacy will live on through Iris Nutrition Group who will be doing business as Allison Nutrition Consulting, led by Cathey Stoner, MS, RDN, LDN, and Jessica VanCleave, MPH, RDN, LDN. Having worked closely with Nan over the past 2.5 years, Cathey and Jessica have been managing day-to-day operations at Allison Nutrition Consulting and mentored under Nan’s leadership and vision.

Nan leaves behind more than a business—she leaves a movement that has challenged diet culture, embraced intuitive eating, and empowered clients to build joyful, fulfilling relationships with food and their bodies.

Thank you, Nan, for your vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the field of nutrition. Your impact will be felt for generations to come. — Cathey Stoner
