Nashville Toddler’s Tragic Death Triggers Investigation and Charges; Man Accused Amid Reports of Blunt Force Trauma

Disturbing Death of Nashville Toddler Leads to Charges and Investigation

Particulars of the Case

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Department of Children’s Service (DCS) has initiated an investigation following the accusal of a man concerning the demise of a toddler in Nashville. The department verified the investigation but refrained from commenting on previous abuse reports related to the case. On Wednesday, the authorities detained 25-year-old Keith Swanson regarding the death of a 22-month-old girl.

About the Victim

The distressed victim identified as Myrikle Belin was hurried to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after Swanson alarmed 911 stating her unresponsiveness. This call was reported at 8:24 a.m. on Monday from her Riverside Drive residence. Despite prompt medical intervention, the toddler deceased by upon admission to the hospital.

Autopsy Reports

An autopsy performed on Tuesday revealed bruising on the child’s face, head, and chest. Internal scalp cuts, hemorrhaging, along with a swollen brain were also found. The consequent cause of death was attributed to blunt force trauma.

Details from Close Sources

According to sources, Myrikle’s legal foster parent was her aunt. The aunt was dating Swanson, who has now been accused of this heinous act. She confessed to leaving Myrikle alive and interacting at around 7:30 a.m. on Monday to attend her college class.

Responsibilities of the Department of Children’s Services

The DCS stated that in cases of child deaths, their immediate concern is ensuring the safety of other children within the household from potential abuse. The department assured their cooperation with the primary law enforcement agency if a coincidental criminal investigation began.

The Child Protection Investigation Team (CPIT)

In all severe child abuse cases including this, a CPIT gets convened. The team is made up of DCS staff, a representative from the District Attorney’s (DA) office, law enforcement, and a representative from the local Child Advocacy Center. The CPIT is tasked with conducting interviews, collecting and reviewing evidence, and records during the course of the investigation. Their findings will substantiate if abuse has actually occurred, independent of the results of any criminal investigation.

The Implication of Substantiated Abuse

When an act of abuse is substantiated, the perpetrator’s name is added to the Child Abuse Registry. The registry plays an essential role in running background checks by schools, daycare centers, child-placing agencies, and other bodies.
