Dismas House Celebrates Volunteers at Annual Appreciation Awards

Nashville, July 13, 2024 – Dismas House, a leading reentry program, recognized the exceptional contributions and achievements of its volunteers, residents, board members, and partners on June 13, 2024, during the annual Volunteer Appreciation Awards. More than 75 people attended the event, which included a barbeque dinner prepared by Phillip Hill, the organization’s vice president of operations.

Recognizing Community Partners and Volunteers

“Dismas House would not be what it is today without community partners and volunteers who share their time and talents with us and bring needed resources for our residents,” states Kay Kretsch, Dismas House CEO. The organization extends its hearty congratulations to all the awardees for their extraordinary contributions.

2024 Volunteer Appreciation Awardees

Throughout the 2023-24 fiscal year, several individuals and organizations have displayed outstanding dedication and service, which were suitably recognized and appreciated during the event.

Volunteer Service Award

Alex Joynes, a doctoral intern at Belmont University, was recognized for her contribution to Dismas House during her final capstone project. She successfully revamped community dinners by introducing an annual calendar and daily themes. In addition, Joynes developed an online database on different topics and created templated handouts to sustain the program.

Community Partner Service Award

The Urban League of Middle Tennessee, led by CEO Clifton Harris, was honored for enhancing Dismas House’s programming to meet the residents’ needs. The organization provided numerous resources for residents, including assistance with rent payments, certifications, and tuition.

Student Service Award

Vanessa Kirschke, a clinical intern from Austin Peay State University, received the award for her commitment in leading weekly group therapy sessions and providing individualized counseling support and customized treatment plans that significantly changed the lives of residents.

Board Service Award

Dmetria Gibson, the Chief Transition Officer and General Counsel for the Tennessee Rehabilitative Initiative in Correction (TRICOR), received the award for her service as a board member and program committee chair at Dismas House. Gibson has worked diligently to remove barriers and promote access and equity for residents.

John Jenkins Jr. Resident Service Award

Erik Dunn was commended for his role as a model for other residents. By participating fully in the programming, advocating for residents, and sharing his story with the community, Dunn has positively impacted those around him.
