Nashville recently welcomed a remarkable figure back to the stage at Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School. Dr. Eiman Jahangir, a resident of this vibrant city and a cardiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, returned to share a story that is less about the prescription pad and more about reaching for the stars—literally!
Years ago, Dr. Jahangir delighted audiences by playing the role of Tweedledee in a school production of Alice in Wonderland. Back then, he would share with anyone who would listen that he dreamed of becoming a doctor one day. However, there was another aspiration he kept close to his heart—he wanted to be an astronaut. He admitted, “There were no Eiman Jahangirs in space. I didn’t know anyone that looked like me or sounded like me or had my story doing it.” This notion left him feeling that his dream was somewhat out of reach.
Fast forward to August 29, 2023, and Dr. Jahangir experienced the thrill of a lifetime as he took a flight into near space with Blue Origin, a private space exploration company founded by the well-known businessman Jeff Bezos. During this incredible journey, Dr. Jahangir, along with five fellow adventurers, sped away from a launchpad in West Texas, hitting speeds of around 2,200 mph before crossing the outer limits of Earth’s atmosphere. The entire experience lasted only about 11 minutes from liftoff to landing, but for Dr. Jahangir, it was a moment almost two decades in the making.
When Dr. Jahangir took the stage once again at MLK High School, a collective hush fell over the audience of students. They were eager to soak in the wisdom of someone who dared to dream big. As he recounted the exhilarating moments of his spaceflight, including a few minutes of weightlessness, his joy was contagious. “I am crying because I’ve been trying to get to this for 20 years,” he stated, pointing to a video showing him inside the rocket capsule named New Shepard. “It’s OK to cry.”
Dr. Jahangir’s path to the stars certainly wasn’t a straight line. He had applied to be an astronaut multiple times with NASA, making it to the finals in both 2009 and 2012, but was not selected each time. “That was pretty devastating,” he recounted candidly. Despite these setbacks, he kept the hope alive. The rise of commercial space travel opened a new door in 2021, and with it, new opportunities to pursue his childhood dream. It was a sweepstakes win that ultimately got him aboard the Blue Origin flight this summer.
During his brief adventure above the Earth, Dr. Jahangir gathered valuable scientific data, wearing portable medical devices designed to monitor how factors like radiation influence the immune system and genetic expressions. He even brought along a cherished photo from his childhood days in Iran, a symbol of his family’s journey and the distance they had traveled from a life marred by war to one filled with opportunities.
As he wrapped up his talk in front of eager faces filled with hope, Dr. Jahangir encouraged students to embrace the idea that failure is often part of the journey. “I’m telling you right now: If you’re trying hard things, expect to fail,” he advised. “But don’t let that failure bring you down. Find a way to make it work for you.” His message resonated, leaving a room full of young dreamers inspired and ready to chase their own lofty aspirations.
Dr. Eiman Jahangir’s story reminds us that our dreams can indeed take us to great heights, even when the odds seem stacked against us. His journey from a Tweedledee to a space traveler stands as a testament to determination and the power of following one’s dreams, no matter how impossible they might seem.
