NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The citizens of the Music City woke up to a strong storm sweeping across the region this Wednesday, raising significant threats and causing disruptions in daily life. The day was declared a First Alert Weather Day with a series of severe storms erupting into life from the early morning onwards.
In the midst of a compelling cold front ushering through Tennessee, the primary threats include gusty winds, heavy rain, and the possibility of an isolated tornado. Even in the absence of thunderstorms, the region witnessed wind gusts nearing 40 mph at times. A Wind Advisory is in effect until noon today.
Clarksville was the first to feel the stormy onslaught at around 5 AM, closely followed by Nashville receiving the heaviest downpours near 7 AM. The storm displayed its potency while making its way southeast across the mid-state, expected to recede over the Cumberland Plateau by 11 AM.
The fear of a tornado threat, although not high, could not be completely overlooked. A Tornado Watch has been implemented for parts of northern Middle Tennessee and parts of Southern Kentucky. The morning hours saw temperatures witnessing a phenomenal drop from the 60s to the 40s and 30s within a span of few hours.
From concerns about power outages to provisions for emergency kits, the local authorities have advised residents on the necessary precautionary measures. These included advice on preparations for potential power outages and the need for a home emergency kit. Residents have also been reminded to fix their home emergency plans in anticipation of radical weather.
With the storm clearing, towards the end of the week people can expect more sunshine around while temperatures remain slightly below average for early March. As for the weekend, a noteworthy reprieve is expected with temperatures recovering nicely back into the 60s and 70s during the afternoons. Possible stray showers and rain showers expected late Monday into Tuesday next week, with a high on Monday in the low 70s.
The extreme weather has also taken a toll on flight schedules, with possible delays and cancellations at the Nashville International Airport. As a consequence of the severe weather, major crashes and debris have been reported leading to prevailing disruption in traffic flow. Concerned citizens are advised to check scheduled flight statuses and stay aware of major crashes or debris
