This past weekend, the charming city of Franklin, just a short drive from Nashville, buzzed with excitement and heartfelt gratitude at a truly remarkable event called Select Your Crown. Women and children grappling with hair loss were welcomed with open arms and given the gift of a beautiful wig – absolutely free! As they left the event, the change in their demeanor was palpable; many felt like a brand-new person.
The brainchild behind this inspiring initiative is none other than Markeisha Wardell, whose passion for helping others has turned Select Your Crown into an annual tradition. “So it has really grown,” she shared with enthusiasm while fitting a wig to one of the event’s recipients. “In the first year, I handmade a hundred wigs, and I just started putting it out there. We had some amazing stylists step up, and now what started as a small project has blossomed into year two, three, and four!”
It’s easy to see how much this event means to both the participants and the volunteers. Paula Robinson-Nelson, one of the dedicated volunteers, revealed her deep connection to the cause. “I was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, and all my hair fell out. It was devastating to me because my hair was my joy,” she recounted with a warm smile. When Paula received her wig, it was transformational. “They dressed me up, put the wig on me and when I looked in that mirror, it was like, wow, is that really me?”
As the day unfolded, back stage, Markisha continued to work her magic, giving each participant a personalized touch by sculpting the wigs to fit perfectly. Just moments before handing over the mirror to a nervous recipient, she added those last finishing touches – a sprinkle of love, care, and artistry. When she revealed the mirror, the look of surprise and happiness was priceless. It was not just a wig; it was a new crown, symbolizing strength and newfound confidence.
The atmosphere was filled with laughter, hope, and connection. Hair loss can often be accompanied by feelings of loss and identity struggles. Events like this bring people together, reminding everyone that they are not alone in their journeys. Every wig wasn’t just a hairpiece; it was a lifeline—a beacon of hope shining brightly in the lives of attendees.
If you’re curious about this heartwarming event and would like to support such initiatives or even participate in future events, keep an eye on community boards in your area or reach out to local charities focused on health and wellness. Embracing and uplifting one another can create waves of positivity and change, making the world a brighter place.
With its profound success, Select Your Crown is poised to continue making a ripple in the community. Many attendees left feeling different – and in most cases, they walked away empowered and radiant.
So whether you’re located in Franklin or just passing through, remember that acts of kindness, like those offered at this event, remind us all of the importance of community spirit and the power of love and empathy.
Until next time, keep shining!
