Friedman’s closes after 75 Years; Nashville says a heartfelt goodbye to the iconic store
Nashville, Tenn. — The Friedman family has been a name synonymous with Nashville for over 75 years. Their business, Friedman’s Army Navy Outdoor Store, has been the go-to shopping destination serving locals for generations. However, this chapter in Nashville’s history has come to an end as the iconic store has now officially closed its doors.
Walking into Friedman’s on its last active day evoked a sense of nostalgia. Although the familiar faces like owner Frank Friedman and the long-standing employees, Linda Wright, and Patsy Curtis, were present as always, the once lively store was now marked by empty shelves, marking the end of an era.
A Sad Day for Friedman’s and Nashville
Upon entering the store, a woman told Frank, “It’s a sad day to see you leave,” to which he replied, “Everything comes to an end.” This poignant moment echoed the sentiment of all those present. The once bustling center of commerce and community stood silent in its final hours.
Decades of Pioneering Retail in Nashville
The very first Friedman’s was opened by Frank’s father in 1949, on 4th Avenue downtown, close to where the Arcade stands today. Over the decades, the business expanded, with other Friedman’s stores being added to the local scene. The final store, now closing, has been a staple on the 21st Avenue since 1972.
Generations of Service
The longevity of Friedman’s is a testament to its tireless service and dedication to the community. “I can say thank you to all my customers,” said Linda, indicating the deep bond which Friedman’s has cultivated over the years. “I thank you for your business, your patronage, your friendship,” added Frank.
“It’s good to know you can help somebody and make their day a happy day,” Patsy mentioned, underlining the warmth and personal care that characterized Friedman’s service.
Turning the Page
“I’m getting older,” Frank stated. “My wife is getting older. Patsy is getting older. Linda’s getting older. It’s our time. It’s our time to go.” As the Friedman family move onto the next chapter, the legacy of their store continues to live on in the memories of countless Nashville residents.
A Legacy Remembered
When asked what his father would have felt about the business surviving right up until 2024, Frank said, “I think the fact this business has been run by the Friedman family for 75 years, that would definitely make him very proud.”
“We’ll be remembered a long, long time, I hope,” expressed Linda, fittingly encapsulating the deep emotional connection that the store has with the local community.
To many, Friedman’s Army Navy Outdoor Store was more than just a shop; it was a testament to the close-knit spirit of the local community. Even though the store won’t be there in bricks and mortar, its legacy will undoubtedly be remembered for many more years to come.
