Drivers have found themselves spending upwards of 45 minutes just to navigate Hillsboro Pike, one of the key thoroughfares in the area. Metro Councilmember Jeff Preptit, a representative for the Green Hills area, is keenly aware of these traffic concerns. He describes the mounting congestion as “getting worse and worse” and has taken it upon himself to address the issues before they escalate further. “That is one of the things I am hyper-aware of,” he shared, emphasizing the need for action.
According to Preptit, one of the key trouble spots appears to be the traffic lights at the intersection of Glen Echo Road and Crestmoor Road. These signals have been causing significant backups, contributing to a frustrating experience for those trying to make their way home. In light of this, Preptit has been collaborating with the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) on possible solutions, including reconfiguring the stop lights for smoother traffic flow.
A Shift to Side Streets
As drivers attempt to navigate the congested roads, many are diverting onto two-lane neighborhood streets, which unfortunately lack sidewalks. This unintended consequence of traffic avoidance has disrupted the peaceful atmosphere of these communities. “People are trying to skirt around the traffic and speeding through the neighborhoods,” Preptit warned. “This causes a significant safety issue.”

Plans for Improvement
In response to these challenges, Councilmember Preptit is advocating for improvements that include adding more sidewalks and implementing a traffic calming system to protect pedestrians. “For folks who are just trying to come home and take their kids and their dogs for a walk after a long day of work, we need to ensure they can do that safely,” he explained.
The ongoing discussions with NDOT have led to promising changes, including an anticipated completion of the traffic light reconfiguration by early next year. This gives residents some hope that their daily commute will soon become less of a struggle.
