A Little Bit About HADESTOWN

For those who might not be familiar, HADESTOWN is not just any musical; it’s a groundbreaking piece created by celebrated singer-songwriter and Tony winner Anaïs Mitchell. Working alongside her artistic collaborator, original director, and another Tony winner, Rachel Chavkin, this show has made waves in the theater world. What’s really impressive is that it marks the first time in over ten years that a woman has been the solo author of a Broadway musical, meaning she wrote the music, lyrics, and book all by herself. How cool is that?

Since its Broadway debut at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019, HADESTOWN has captivated audiences night after night. The show features two intertwining love stories—the romantic journey of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice and the complex partnership between King Hades and his wife, Persephone. This inventive take on an ancient tale invites audiences to join their hell-raising journey to the underworld and back!

A Musical Journey Like No Other

Musically, HADESTOWN is a delightful blend of modern American folk music and New Orleans-inspired jazz. Mitchell’s entrancing melodies and Chavkin’s poetic storytelling pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love, creating an emotionally charged experience for everyone in the theater. With a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, this show truly delivers an unforgettable and hopeful theatrical experience.

Record-Breaking Success

Before its return to Nashville, HADESTOWN had a journey that started with a world premiere in 2016 at the New York Theatre Workshop, claiming the record for the longest-running show in its celebrated 40-year history. It also made its way to Canada with a successful premiere at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre in 2017 and sold out performances at London’s National Theatre in 2018.

Community Support

All of this success wouldn’t have been possible without support from various organizations, including funding from the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center and further development by Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Co-conceived by Ben t. Matchstick, HADESTOWN has become a show that is not only popular among theatrical fans but also a testament to what exceptional storytelling and creativity can achieve.

So, Nashville, mark your calendars for March 7-9, 2025, as HADESTOWN is set to return, and it’s bound to be a performance you won’t want to miss!
