Born on October 28, 1943, to Celesta Atwater Franklin and Henry A. Atwater, Henry was the eldest of four siblings. He grew up with a palpable drive to succeed and make a difference, receiving his early education at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School and later at Father Ryan High School. Ambition led him to Tennessee State University, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Psychology. He wasn’t done yet! He went on to obtain a Specialist degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

A Fruitful Career in Psychology

Henry dedicated his career to improving the lives of others. For 48 years, he served at Meharry Medical College in multiple roles, including psychologist, professional counselor, Director of Student Services, and Director of the Counseling Center. He became known as “Meharry’s Storyteller” and the “Voice of Meharry”, earning a place in the hearts of countless students and colleagues. His commitment and passion for education were evident in the way he facilitated learning and support for those around him.

Family Man with a Heart of Gold

On August 2, 1969, Henry married Sula Delois Pulley, and together they shared a beautiful journey that lasted 55 years. Their love and partnership became an anchor for their family, which includes their two children, Ingrid Lynn Atwater and Henry Anderson Atwater III. He also treasured his role as a grandfather to Lawrence R. Jeter III, who lovingly referred to him as “Precious Boy.” Family gatherings, spirited conversations, and a strong sense of community were pillars in Henry’s life.

An Indomitable Spirit

Henry’s resilience was nothing short of inspiring. Even when faced with health challenges, he demonstrated an iron will, driving himself to dialysis treatments. His independence and remarkable work ethic were a testament to his character and determination.

A proud life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, Henry was initiated into the Nashville Alumni Chapter in 1978. His love for the Tennessee Titans was well-known, and he was an active supporter of the team. Furthermore, for over 70 years, Henry was a devoted member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he attended services regularly and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his faith.

When the holiday season rolled around, Henry transformed his home into a winter wonderland. His legendary love for Christmas brought joy to many, showcasing his ability to spread happiness and warmth.

Legacy and Final Arrangements

Henry is survived by his wife Sula, daughter Ingrid (Lamont) Stone, son Henry Anderson Atwater III, grandson Lawrence, brothers Jack Atwater and William (Rochelle) Price, and various extended family members. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Nashville Guide Right Foundation, honoring his commitment to community service.

A public viewing will take place on December 30, 2024, at Lewis & Wright FD from 2-4 PM, followed by funeral services to be conducted at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on December 31, 2024.
