Cape Coral, Florida, is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Milton as residents are left dealing with the aftermath of a tornado that struck the area just ahead of the storm. This has created a feeling of unease in the community, especially for those with family members who are unable to evacuate.
A terrifying scene unfolded recently in Cape Coral when a tornado swept through neighborhoods, leaving destruction in its wake. Ring camera footage from a local family’s business shows the swirling winds and debris flying, giving a glimpse into the chaos. Local resident William Rogers captured cellphone video that showcases the incredible strength of the wind as it whipped trees around, leaving many in shock.
The tornado struck just weeks after Hurricane Helene already devastated the area, further adding to the concerns of residents. Neveah Rogers, a sophomore at Trevecca University in Nashville, is worried sick about her family’s safety as Hurricane Milton approaches. They live just south of where the hurricane is expected to hit hardest, and Neveah has expressed her fears for their well-being.
“I know my family has been through this before, but it is just scary,” Neveah shared, voicing the anxieties that many in her position feel during such uncertain times. With potential power outages and water shortages looming due to Milton, she is particularly worried about her youngest sister, who has diabetes and relies on insulin that needs to be kept cool.
Neveah described her family’s struggle to evacuate as flights were canceled, and a gas shortage complicated matters. “They were looking for flights Wednesday and those got canceled. They were looking for Thursday flights those got canceled and then gas, I mean there is a gas shortage,” she explained. As a result, her family decided it would be safer to stay inside rather than risk being on the roads.
Neveah had been looking forward to her family visiting her for an upcoming soccer game. Now, that seems uncertain. “I am pretty worried that they are not going to get up here, and I am also worried that I am not going to be able to get down there,” she said. The worry on her face echoed the sentiments of many students and families divided by such unpredictable circumstances.
Despite these challenges, Neveah’s father, William, remains optimistic. Having lived on an elevated plain and weathered hurricanes in the past, he believes they can handle this storm too. “We expect to be fine,” he stated confidently. William also mentioned he plans to help others in the community once the hurricane passes.
The resilience of Cape Coral’s community shines through even in tough times. As families prepare for Hurricane Milton, neighbors are banding together, offering supportive words and looking out for each other. The spirit of camaraderie is critical as the community faces yet another hurricane while recovering from recent storms.
For now, residents are holding their breath as Hurricane Milton approaches, hoping for the best while preparing for the worst. Stay safe, Cape Coral! The community will get through this together.
