Long-Term Lane Closure to Remain in Place for I-840 Bridge Repairs

Nashville, Tenn. – I-840 Bridge Temporary Lane Closure

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced a single-lane closure on the I-840 Bridge for around three months due to the necessary repairs on a damaged bridge located in Williamson County.

The TDOT confirmed that the closure is as a result of damage caused to the I-840 Eastbound bridge, specific at mile marker 28, by a CSX crew working on the railroad underneath. The incident led to an immediate closure of the bridge to all vehicular traffic for damage assessment.

After an extensive inspection of the bridge, TDOT inspection crews established that the untouched section of the bridge remained safe for crossing. However, the right lane of the road will continue to be closed until all necessary repair works are finalized.

Implementing an Emergency Bridge Repair Contract

A prompt emergency bridge repair contract has been put into action with Bell and Associates Construction. On the part of TDOT, crews will conduct a traffic shift, with the aim of reestablishing one lane of traffic during the overnight hours.

The current diversion at Exit 23 for State Route 246/ Carters Creek Pike will remain functional until the traffic can be successfully shifted overnight. Once the lane restriction is firmly in place, TDOT will collaborate with Bell Construction and CSX for a three-month-long repair project.

Expectations for Travelers

While most parts of the project will allow one lane of travel to remain operational, there are expectations of temporary, short-term total bridge closings during the project. TDOT endeavors to perform these critical repair works in the safest and timely manner, minimizing traffic disruptions.

Drivers are reminded to abide by the Move Over Law, which mandates reduction of speed and shifting lanes while traveling through a work zone. Violation of this law in Tennessee may lead to up to 30 days in jail and/or a fine of maximum $500.
