Nashville Sets New Vision for the Community
Nashville, a city known for its vibrant culture and music scene, is taking a big step towards shaping its future. On Friday, an important report was released which encompasses the thoughts and feelings of over 10,000 residents in the form of the Imagine Nashville 10-year vision plan. The plan aims to get Nashville back to its roots and prioritize community unity while catering to the needs of all Nashvillians.
What Did Residents Say?
The findings indicate that a sense of belonging is a core value among Nashville residents, yet it is a feeling that seems to be threatened for some. Co-chair of Imagine Nashville, Dr. Alex Jahangir, expressed during a news conference that it’s essential for the city to foster an atmosphere where everyone feels that they can thrive. The vision isn’t just about progress but about making sure all voices count.
One alarming revelation in the report showed that income plays a substantial role in determining the sense of belonging among Nashville’s residents. A staggering 57% of families living on low income reported feeling excluded from the benefits that come with living in this famous city. Given that around 47% of Nashvillians identify as low-income, this could represent a significant portion of the population.
Focus Areas for the Next Decade
The report outlines four key priorities that Nashville will focus on as it moves towards a decade of growth and improvement. The areas identified are:
- Stronger Pathways to Income: Ensuring all residents find stable and well-paying employment.
- Improved Transit Options: Enhancing public transportation to make commuting easier for everyone.
- Boosting Affordable Housing: Increasing the availability of affordable housing options to accommodate all residents.
- Maintaining Neighborhood Character: Preserving the unique characteristics of each neighborhood while still promoting growth.
In addition to these priorities, Nashville has set ambitious goals to achieve by the year 2035. One goal is to increase the percentage of “good and promising” jobs in the city from 44% to an impressive 60%. Moreover, they aim to have 20% of residents using non-car commutes for trips to work. The city also hopes to produce and preserve at least 50,000 affordable housing units, ensuring that current and future residents have a place to call home.
Communicate and Connect
Mayor Freddie O’Connell spoke positively about the findings, calling the report reassuring and even stating that it aligns with the initiatives his office has implemented during his first year in office. His administration has focused on improving the quality of life in Nashville while making it more affordable for its residents. “Our aim is to create a city where everyone feels they belong and can succeed,” O’Connell noted in a recent statement.
Hearing Everyone’s Voice
The report also brought to light that many members of specific communities, including 48% of LGBTQ+ individuals and 45% of seniors aged 65 and older, feel a lack of belonging in Nashville. This underscores the important work that remains to be done to ensure that every group in the city has a chance to not only participate but to thrive.
As Nashville looks towards the future with bold visions and well-thought-out strategies, the focus is clear: to bring the community together and ensure that everyone feels included and has the opportunity to prosper.
