Nashville, TN – The Nashville Symphony has made an exciting announcement, appointing Jeff vom Saal as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), starting on September 9. This decision comes after a nationwide search for someone capable of enhancing the organization’s operational excellence and community impact.

Role and Responsibilities

In his new role, vom Saal will report directly to the Nashville Symphony President and CEO, Alan D. Valentine. He will be responsible for overseeing various crucial areas including artistic planning, orchestra operations, education, community engagement, as well as communications and marketing. Essentially, vom Saal will manage the day-to-day activities of the symphony while also focusing on long-term strategic initiatives to ensure the growth and success of the organization for the future.

Experience and Background

Jeff vom Saal is no stranger to the world of orchestras, boasting over 20 years of experience managing various orchestras across the country. Before joining the Nashville Symphony, he held leadership positions in several respected organizations including:

  • Marin Symphony – San Rafael, California
  • Quad City Symphony Orchestra – Davenport, Iowa
  • Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra – Fargo-Moorhead, North Dakota
  • Metrowest Youth Symphony Orchestra – Boston, Massachusetts
  • Spokane Symphony Orchestra – Spokane, Washington

At the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, Jeff played a pivotal role in steering the organization through a time of growth and stability, during which the operating budget doubled and community engagement flourished. Under his guidance, the Fox Theater, associated with the Spokane symphony, hosted over 200 events annually, attracting more than 85,000 visitors.

Personal Background

Originally hailing from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, vom Saal grew up in Oneonta, New York. His musical journey began at an impressively young age when he picked up the trumpet at just four years old. He later graduated from the New England Conservatory with a Bachelor of Music and completed the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Over the years, he has held several executive leadership roles in orchestras, showcasing his deep commitment to music and community. Outside of work, Jeff is also a father of two college students, Maximillian and Melina, who are now pursuing their studies in Southern California.
