Amarillo, Texas, is remembering one of its own. Jimmy Gilmer, the voice behind the 1963 hit “*Sugar Shack*,” has passed away at the age of 83. He took his last breath in hospice care on September 7, 2023, after a brave battle with Alzheimer’s Disease that lasted two years. His death is felt deeply in the hearts of oldies fans and fellow musicians alike.
Jimmy’s story begins in Chicago, where he was born in 1940, but he spent most of his youth in Amarillo. It was there that he found his passion for music, and in 1959, his journey took a turn when he joined Norman Petty’s studio as a session vocalist in Clovis, New Mexico. The studio was famous for producing hits from legends like Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. This was the playground where he would hone his craft.
Gilmer joined a local rock group known as The Fireballs in 1962. The band had already made waves with top 40 instrumental hits like “*Torquay*” and “*Bulldog*.” But everything changed in 1963 when they released “*Sugar Shack*.” This catchy tune quickly climbed its way to the No. 1 spot on the pop charts, claiming the title of the biggest selling single that year. Talk about a way to make a splash!
Following the success of “*Sugar Shack*,” Gilmer and The Fireballs released another hit titled “*Daisy Petal Pickin’,*” which reached No. 15. They didn’t rest on their laurels; they kept producing music under the guidance of Norman Petty, who also had The Fireballs record tracks for Buddy Holly’s posthumous projects.
The late 1960s were equally kind to them with the rocking top 10 hit “*Bottle of Wine*.” Although not every single made it to the top, like “*Come On, React!*,” which placed at No. 63 nationally but found love in various local markets, their sound continued to resonate with fans for years.
As the decade closed, The Fireballs decided to hang up their instruments. In 1970, Jimmy made the significant leap to Nashville, the heart of country music. He started working with United Artists Music and soon carved a niche for himself in the music publishing industry. Over the next 30 years, he climbed the corporate ladder to hold influential executive positions at CBS Songs, EMI, and SBK. The music world became a canvas where he helped the careers of numerous songwriters including Richard Leigh and Bobby Goldsboro.
One notable talent he signed was Brad Paisley, whom he managed during the early stages of his career. Gilmer also played an active role in the Nashville community, serving as president of the Nashville chapter of The Recording Academy from 1989 to 1991 and graduating from Leadership Music in 1992.
Although Gilmer retired in 2007, he stayed connected to his musical roots by occasionally performing at oldies shows. His impact on the music industry—and the hearts of those who loved his songs—will not be forgotten. With his talent, dedication, and unmatched enthusiasm for music, Jimmy Gilmer created a legacy that will resonate for years to come.
As fans and friends mourn this great loss, funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. But one thing is clear: Jimmy Gilmer’s tunes will continue to bring joy to listeners everywhere, reminding us all of a time when music had a special magic.
