In the heart of Nashville, Tennessee, singer Kassi Ashton is making waves with her debut album, Made From the Dirt, which dropped this past September. This Missouri-native is not just a talented singer-songwriter; she’s a crafty creator who can stitch together a dress or weave a powerful song that strikes a chord with listeners. Over a dozen years spent in Nashville has shaped her art, and now she’s fully ready to share her stories with the world.
Ashton has an undeniable authenticity that shines through in her music. The album houses a mix of emotions and experiences, presenting seeds of vulnerability that she has cultivated over time. The single Called Crazy notably flips the script on Miranda Lambert’s classic Kerosene, transforming a narrative into a cautionary yet seductive tune. “I’ll die on the hill of being comfortable with not being some neat, boring girl,” Ashton states, her characteristic laughter underscoring her words.
On a muggy afternoon, she reflects on her journey from a student at Belmont University to a recognized voice in Music City. She admits, “I’m finally not in the pocket of last fall’s jacket,” conveying the feeling of shedding past constraints to embrace her true identity. The title of her album, Made From the Dirt, defines her essence: it’s about finding beauty in imperfection and acknowledging one’s roots.
Ashton’s music weaves together themes of resilience. “Made from the dirt, came up from the ground, born to bloom when I get knocked down,” she lyrically conveys in her album’s title track. Throughout her music, she embraces the juxtaposition of her experiences, saying, “Everything I think that’s good in this world arrived because of a juxtaposition.” This colorful outlook on life is a refreshing perspective in the current music scene.
Part of what makes Ashton’s music so relatable is her upbringing. Raised in a neighborhood often colored by its working-class identity, she brings a slice of that experience into her songwriting. Her father, a chain-smoker from Missouri, lived in a home that shows signs of a hardworking life, complete with a workshop bursting with memories. “We’re hillbillies, y’know?” she jokes, as she colors her childhood memories with humor and warmth.
Ashton attributes much of her creativity to her beloved grandmother Juanita, who recently passed away. The song Juanita acts as both a tribute and a reflection of their bond. She shared how the track transformed from a ballad into an anthem in her grandmother’s memory, sung at her funeral. “She’s one of God’s favorites,” Ashton declares, celebrating the legacy left by her grandmother.
Ashton describes her creative process as therapeutic, noting that being vulnerable can be simultaneously frightening and freeing. “I just want to offer my well-intentioned help for people through life’s struggles,” she explains. Here, she delivers a strong message: no matter how many times you get knocked down, standing back up makes you shine even brighter. “At the end of the day, I’m trying to live my life according to the Abraham Lincoln quote that says, ‘Whoever you are, be a good one,’” she adds.
As Ashton continues her journey, she hopes that her story resonates with those who hear her music. Her authenticity has already garnered attention within the industry, and she is determined to keep creating. “I’m leaning so much into myself and putting so much vulnerability into the world that it scares me,” she reveals. Whether she’s writing songs, designing clothes, or telling stories, Kassi Ashton remains grounded in the dirt that has shaped her into the artist she is today.
With Made From the Dirt, Kassi invites all of us to explore the layers of life alongside her—because, in the end, we’re all a little dirty, and that’s perfectly okay.
