Nashville, Tennessee, is home to a family facing a tough journey, as little Everett Drewes continues to fight for a healthier life. Born with two damaged kidneys, Everett’s battle with kidney disease has brought about many challenges for his parents, Matthew and Margaret Drewes, who are now on the lookout for a new kidney donor to give their son a chance for a brighter future.
At just four years old, Everett has already faced more medical issues than most people do in a lifetime. His parents describe him as a cheerful child who wants to help out in the kitchen, but behind that innocent desire lies the harsh reality of his health situation. He has been reliant on a catheter due to his lack of kidney function, which places extra medical needs on the family.
Everett’s home resembles something of a small medical facility, with boxes of dialysis fluid taking up space in their foyer. Each night, he is attached to a dialysis machine for a whopping ten hours, a process crucial for removing excess fluid from his body since he cannot produce urine. “Since he has no kidneys, he cannot produce urine, so that is the only way that fluid can be pulled off his body,” shared Margaret.
Last year was a significant milestone for Everett and his family. On his third birthday, Matthew discovered that he was a match and successfully donated one of his kidneys to his beloved son. It was an emotional occasion filled with hope, but sadly, the outcome was not as expected. “Pretty quickly we figured out, for reasons we don’t seem to understand, it wasn’t working properly,” Matthew candidly explained, highlighting the frustration and confusion that often accompanies situations like this.
Though Matthew’s selfless act of donating a kidney was a brave step, Everett’s health still hangs in the balance, causing the Drewes family to return to square one in their search for a suitable donor.
Despite the hurdles they are facing, Margaret remains hopeful. “We just need that one person, so the more people who are willing to get tested, we are confident we can find a good match,” she expressed. Their plea to the community is heartfelt, as they described the qualities of an ideal donor: healthy individuals aged between 18 and 55 with either type A or O blood are encouraged to consider stepping forward.
The family’s openness about their challenges has inspired many in the Nashville community. They are enthusiastic about raising awareness and providing information to anyone interested in participating in the testing process. Each potential donor brings a glimmer of hope, bringing the Dreweses one step closer to fulfilling their dream of a healthier future for Everett.
Through all the difficulties, the Drewes family has managed to cultivate a positive outlook. They often share stories about the joy that Everett brings to their lives and how they cherish every moment together, despite the backdrop of ongoing medical challenges. Everett’s laughter can often be heard throughout their home, a remarkable testament to his fighting spirit.
As the Drewes continue their quest, they remind everyone of the importance of compassion and community. Their journey shows just how connected we can be, even in times of hardship, as they strive to find a matching donor who can help change Everett’s life for the better.
For those who feel moved to help, either by spreading the word or considering a donation, the Drewes family is grateful for any support they can get. Together, as a community, we can make a difference in the life of this young boy and show him just how much love surrounds him.
