KIMBERLY AKIMBO isn’t just any run-of-the-mill musical. It’s a heartfelt story about a girl named Kim who is on the brink of turning 16 and dealing with a whole lot more than most teenagers do. Recently uprooted with her family to a new town in suburban New Jersey, she finds herself navigating a chaotic family dynamic, a rare genetic condition, and of course, her very first crush — not to mention some potential felony charges. It might sound like a lot, but amid all these challenges, Kim manages to stay positive and is determined to chase happiness. And who doesn’t love a good underdog story?
This isn’t just any musical — KIMBERLY AKIMBO was named Best Musical by the Tony Awards, New York Drama Critics Circle, The Drama Desk Awards, The Lucille Lortel Awards, and The Outer Critics Circle Awards. That’s quite a list! The show also bagged four other Tony Awards: Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Score by David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori, and Best Book by David Lindsay-Abaire. A special shoutout to Jeanine Tesori, who made history as the first female composer to win two Tony Awards for Best Score with this production!
The creativity doesn’t stop at the storyline. The production boasts an impressive design team: scenic design by David Zinn, costume design by Sarah Laux, and lighting design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, to name a few. The sound is shaped by Kai Harada, while the projection design comes from Lucy MacKinnon. The wig, hair, and make-up design is handled by J. Jared Janas. The whole production really is a collaborative work of art!
After first opening on Broadway on November 10, 2022, to rave reviews, the excitement continues! The musical had a successful run with 32 previews and 612 performances before making its way to Nashville. It originally premiered at the Atlantic Theater Company in November 2021, and from all the buzz, it’s clear that fans will be lining up to see this heartwarming and funny production unfold right before their eyes.
This is your chance to witness a groundbreaking musical that has not only captured the hearts of audiences but also critics alike. So whether you’re a local or just passing through, the Nashville debut of KIMBERLY AKIMBO promises to deliver an unforgettable experience. Trust us; you’ll want to say you were there!
