Nashville Home Invasion Turned Wrong: Suspect Faces Multiple Felony Charges After Mistaken Identity Incident

Nashville’s Community Shaken by Mistaken Home Invasion

In a bizarre turn of events that unfolded in Nashville, Tennessee, a man is now facing serious felony charges after a frightening home invasion that was all based on a mix-up. Yes, you heard that right—a case of mistaken identity led to quite the chaos in what should have been a normal day for a victim and his family.

The Scene of the Incident

It all went down in late July, in the cozy neighborhood along the 500 block of Sylvan Street. Local authorities received a distress call reporting a burglary in progress. When police arrived, they found three terrified individuals inside the apartment, while the suspects had already made their escape.

A Hair-Raising Encounter

According to an arrest report, one of the victims, who was thankfully unharmed, described hearing someone aggressively shaking his air conditioning unit, which was placed snugly in his bedroom window. Imagine the sheer panic! Just when he thought it couldn’t get any worse, he spotted a man sticking a gun through the window and starting to fire shots.

Talk about a terrifying moment. Thankfully, our victim managed to dodge the bullets and quickly hid under his bed, hoping for the best. But things were about to get even more intense. The suspect, identified later as James Briggs, is accused of firing directly at the mattress where the victim was hiding. Out of sheer desperation, the victim pleaded with Briggs, saying he was in the wrong apartment and that his four grandchildren were inside.

Realization and Retreat

As the story unfolded, it appears that Briggs realized he had indeed made a grave mistake. After venturing into the living room where the victim’s family had gathered, he saw the children and immediately exclaimed, “wrong house, wrong house.” In a hurry, he made a hasty retreat through the same window he had entered. What a twist!

To add another layer to the story, another suspect was identified outside the window—none other than Elijah Kodjo. Eyewitness accounts also confirmed that Kodjo had been seen aiding Briggs in getting into the apartment while another unidentified man stood watch.

Getting to the Bottom of It

Detectives quickly went to work and reviewed security footage from the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency. What they found was shocking yet revealing. The video captured Briggs, Kodjo, and another unidentified man leaving a nearby residence and heading straight to the victim’s apartment. Once the chaos settled down, the trio was seen hopping into a white Ford pickup truck and driving off, ultimately stopping at an address on S. 4th Street.

It’s mind-boggling to think that such a serious situation stemmed from a simple case of wrong place, wrong time. Luckily, no injuries were reported, which is a small miracle given how things unfolded.

The Aftermath and Legal Consequences

Fast forward to August 28, and Briggs was apprehended and booked on a whopping nine charges, which included reckless endangerment, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated burglary, and employing a firearm with intent to kill. As for Kodjo, he was arrested just this week and is facing serious charges as well, including aggravated burglary acting in concert and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in concert.

Conclusion

Nashville, we can all agree that the safety of our community needs to be a priority. This unsettling incident serves as a stark reminder that sometimes, things aren’t as simple as they appear. Let’s hope justice is served swiftly so that the victim and his family can find peace after such a shocking scare.
