Nashville Prepares to Host 2024 Walk for Apraxia Event to Support Children with Speech Disorder

Nashville Gears Up for the Walk for Apraxia Event

Nashville – The city is set to host the 2024 Nashville Walk for Apraxia on September 21st at the scenic Cornelia Fort Airpark. The event aims to raise awareness and support for children dealing with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Activities kick off at 9:00 AM, followed by a ceremonial gathering at 10:00 AM. Registration for the event is absolutely FREE!

Understanding Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Childhood apraxia of speech is a complex motor speech disorder that makes it challenging for children to speak. It is not just a simple inability to pronounce words; instead, it involves difficulty in planning and coordinating the movements necessary for speech. Although there is currently no cure, children diagnosed with CAS often benefit from extensive speech therapy and other supportive therapies, enabling them to reach their full communication potential.

Importance of Raising Awareness

One of the core objectives of the Walk for Apraxia is to raise awareness about this challenging condition. Increased awareness in the community can lead to quicker diagnoses and earlier interventions, which are crucial for effective treatment. “Raising awareness is one of the most tangible ways that communities at large can help children with apraxia thrive,” says a representative involved with the event.

The Walk for Apraxia has emerged as the largest community event focused on celebrating the efforts of children diagnosed with CAS. This event not only fosters a sense of unity but also emphasizes the importance of support from families, friends, speech-language pathologists, and organizations dedicated to this cause.

A Day Full of Activities

Participants can look forward to a day filled with fun, family-friendly activities, along with the ceremonial proceedings. There will be various attractions designed to engage children and families, offering a delightful experience for everyone. In addition, there will be a short, inclusive group walk, allowing participants to come together in solidarity and support of the Apraxia Stars—the children overcoming the challenges brought on by this disorder.

A Support System for Apraxia Stars

Neil Kilby, a father of one of these young achievers, stresses the need for a solid support system. He notes, “Apraxia Stars need a team behind them. That team includes both parents, family members, SLP’s, and organizations like Apraxia Kids.” This illustrates the collective effort required to help these children navigate their speech challenges.

Participating in the Walk for Apraxia sends a strong message to these young stars: there are supporters from the community that stand behind them. It’s an opportunity for families and friends to come together and show that they care about the journeys of these remarkable kids.

Supporting a Greater Cause

The funds raised during the 2024 Walk for Apraxia will benefit Apraxia Kids, the leading nonprofit organization focused on supporting children with CAS. The organization works tirelessly to improve the lives of these children by providing essential resources and training for families and speech-language professionals. Their efforts ensure that children receive accurate diagnoses and timely, appropriate treatments.

The mission of Apraxia Kids revolves around promoting understanding, education, and advocacy for children with childhood apraxia of speech. By contributing to this event, community members can directly aid in enhancing the support systems for these children.

Get Involved!

Community members in Nashville are encouraged to participate in the Walk for Apraxia, not only for the fun of the day but for the impact their involvement can make. Bringing friends and family along not only enriches the experience but also increases the visibility and support for children facing the challenges of CAS. Those interested in joining the walk can find more information by visiting the official website to register and learn how to get involved.

Everyone is invited to unite and celebrate the hard work of young Apraxia Stars while raising awareness about childhood apraxia of speech. This is a wonderful chance to learn more, show support, and contribute to a worthy cause all at once.

Mark your calendars for September 21st, and get ready for a heartwarming, inspiring day dedicated to the kids who light up our community. Together, we can make a difference!
