Nashville, the lively heartbeat of Tennessee, is buzzing with change as Bob Higgins steps down as the CEO of Barge Design Solutions after nearly 16 years at the helm. The news came today, and it marks a significant shift for one of the largest engineering and architecture firms in the area. Higgins will officially transition out of the CEO role on February 28, taking on a new position as chairman of the board. His successor, Carrie Stokes, has been appointed to lead the company starting March 1.
Higgins has had an impressive run since he took the reins of Barge Design Solutions in 2009. His leadership has been marked by tremendous growth, with the firm’s revenue more than tripling under his watch. It’s a testament to his unwavering commitment and vision for the company. “I wanted to leave when the firm was doing well, and there was a lot of good strength in the market,” Higgins shared in a heartfelt interview.
With an illustrious background in the Nashville business community, Higgins has worn many hats over the years. He’s been involved with Ascension Saint Thomas, the Downtown Partnership, and even served as chair of the board of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. One of his notable achievements includes collaborating with Vanderbilt University to create an innovative educational artificial intelligence online course aimed at business leaders.
When it came time for Higgins to step back, he notified the board of his decision in February 2022, giving them ample time to prepare for a leadership transition. A committee was formed to ensure a seamless CEO succession, and with the creation of internal leadership programs, the board found a strong candidate in Stokes, who’s been with the firm since 1996 and started her journey as an intern alongside Higgins.
Stokes is no stranger to hard work, having risen through the ranks over the years. As chief of staff, she has played a crucial role in both the creation and execution of Barge’s national growth initiatives. She believes in maintaining the solid foundation they’ve built as a firm. “It’s about commitment to the path that we’re on. We have our plan in place, and I’m very much thoughtful about how we’re growing and protecting our culture,” Stokes remarked, showing her dedication to the values of the company.
As Higgins steps into his new role as chairman of the board, he will continue to contribute to the company’s ambitious vision, especially in areas like innovation and AI. Both leaders are eager for the future of Barge Design Solutions. “I wanted to finish strong and leave some big shoes to fill,” Higgins expressed, signaling deep trust in Stokes’ capabilities as she steps into leadership.
Higgins hopes his legacy will speak volumes, not just for himself but for the firm he’s passionately led. “That [Barge] did even better after I was gone,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of sustainable growth and vision. This chapter for Barge Design Solutions is just beginning, with Stokes prepared to carry forward the momentum initiated by her predecessor.
As the city of Nashville embraces this moment of evolution, the community looks forward to seeing how this transition unfolds and how Barge Design Solutions continues shaping its future under new leadership.
