Nashville Celebrates Love and Community as Black Pride Festival Launches Its 22nd Year

Nashville’s Heartfelt Celebration: Black Pride Kicks Off Its 22nd Year!

There’s a vibrant buzz in Nashville as the city gears up for its annual celebration of love, community, and pride! The 22nd annual Black Pride festival is officially underway, running through October 27. With the theme this year being “runaway to freedom,” the event promises to be a fantastic journey focusing on connection and celebration among the community.

What’s In Store?

According to Dwyane Jenkins, the founder and president of Nashville Black Pride, there’s a lot to look forward to at this year’s festivities! The celebration is brimming with events that include entertainment, public health education, and the awarding of much-needed scholarships for students. “I am excited along with our small and mighty board and planning team. We are happy to embark on a wonderful celebration,” Jenkins expressed joyfully.

This year’s Festival isn’t just about fun; it’s also about connection. For many past attendees, the event has been a special chance to bond with others in a world that often feels distant, especially since the pandemic made it tough for people to gather and connect. Jenkins believes that the lively atmosphere of Nashville Black Pride offers a great way for folks to get to know each other and build community.

Highlights of the Celebration

One of the major highlights will be the Brothers and Sisters United Legacy Award Dinner and Scholarship event, happening at the Millenium Maxwell House Hotel on October 27. Here, five deserving students will be awarded scholarships to help them on their educational journeys. Jenkins mentioned that for many students, “it’s really hard to get through their semesters and years financially.” That’s why supporting Black and Brown students through direct scholarship assistance is so important to the organization.

And that’s not all— the event will include honoring all the incredible community members and organizations that have been standing by Nashville Black Pride for at least ten years with special Legacy plaques. “We want to show them some love,” Jenkins said, acknowledging their valuable impact over the festival’s 22 years.

Exciting Events Throughout the Week

Get ready for some excitement during the week leading up to the main events! On October 26, attendees can enjoy a Unity Market & Day Party at the hotel, featuring a variety of vendors and an opportunity for free HIV and STI testing. Considering it’s near Halloween, the festival will host a Runway to Freedom Costume Party that same evening, sprinkled with live performances from GLAAD, ensuring a night of fabulous fun.

The festivities continue into the weekend with a MashUp Wholeness Project Brunch on October 27, followed by the TEACollective Final Day Party, which is designed for those looking to wind down the weekend with good vibes and great company. Night owls can even join Kickback Sundays to wrap up the festivities in a relaxing atmosphere.

Community Engagement

Before the festival officially starts, Jenkins and his team will be visiting Fisk University to support the LGBTQ+ group Out Loud, helping to foster allyship and acceptance. Additionally, that night, Nashville Black Pride will delve into an insightful discussion titled “Same Sex in the Bible,” co-hosted with local organizations, encouraging open conversations about faith and inclusivity.

This year’s Black Pride promises to be a real treat for everyone in Nashville. With a mix of fun, education, and community spirit, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, so don’t miss out!
