On November 6, 2024, the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) announced significant progress in their investigation by apprehending the last two suspects connected to this harrowing incident. This development comes after a deadly shooting that happened on October 12, near the bustling festivities for Tennessee State University’s (TSU) homecoming celebrations.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports, the unfortunate event unfolded shortly after 5 p.m. at the intersection of 27th Avenue North and Jefferson Street, where five men with alleged gang ties were involved in an intense shootout. Tragically, Vonquae Johnson, 24, was struck and later succumbed to his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Fast forward to Wednesday, and the police were able to arrest the final two suspects, Corey D. Johnson, 31, and Kiyahn Hayes-Woods, 23, without incident in the 300 block of Berry Street. Notably, Hayes-Woods was found to be armed at the time of the arrest. The authorities reported that both suspects are charged with serious offenses connected to this deadly shooting.

On the other hand, Kiyahn Hayes-Woods has a bond set at $94,000 and is charged with felony reckless endangerment and unlawful gun possession, as he is a convicted felon.

Previous Arrests

The arrests of Johnson and Hayes-Woods follow earlier apprehensions of two other suspects, Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown, both aged 24, who were arrested shortly after the shooting. These two have been charged with criminal homicide in connection to the death of Vonquae Johnson. Adding to the seriousness of the charges, Davis is also facing federal charges for gun possession as a convicted felon.

Residents of Nashville are deeply affected by this incident. The sounds of gunshots echoed near a time meant for celebration and community spirit. Friends and family of the victim, Vonquae Johnson, are mourning the loss of a young life cut short, while the community grapples with the implications of gang violence that overshadows what should have been a joyous occasion. The MNPD continues to encourage anyone with information on the incident to come forward and help bring closure to this tragic case.
