As officers were monitoring the area, a white Honda Accord pulled into the gas station. One of the men, identified as Jaylan Johnson, 22, emerged from the vehicle. Officers noted that he was wearing a black cross-body bag across his chest, which immediately piqued their interest. Johnson approached a nearby white sedan and leaned into the open window. Witnesses probably wouldn’t think twice about such an interaction, but the officers suspected it was more than just small talk. They believed it was a case of a drug deal going down right before their eyes.

Pursuit and Apprehension

After what appeared to be a quick exchange, the officers decided to follow the Honda when it left the gas station. Their hunch proved correct when they spotted the vehicle stopping at a nearby Waffle House. To their astonishment, they noted at least five individuals getting in and out of the backseat of the Honda in quick succession, only sitting inside for a brief moment before departing. It seemed clear that drug transactions were happening, and the officers initiated a stop on the vehicle.

Upon curbing the Honda, the officers immediately noticed a few alarming things: a black cross-body bag and a digital scale were in plain sight. As they approached, the unmistakable smell of marijuana wafted from the car, leading to the eventual arrest of both Johnson and the other man, Demetris Williams, 31.

A closer inspection of the vehicle unveiled a startling array of illicit substances. Officers recovered two loaded firearms—an impressive Shark custom AR-15 and a Taurus pistol—alongside a stash of drugs that could raise eyebrows even among seasoned law enforcement officials.

The Haul

Officers unearthed a total of 65 grams of cocaine, 8.36 grams of methamphetamine, and 29 grams of marijuana in one bag. In a separate bag, they found 226 grams of meth and 10.33 grams of blue pills marked “M30,” which alarmingly field-tested positive for fentanyl. Rounding out the inventory, a third bag was discovered containing 39 grams of marijuana, over six grams of cocaine, 3.5 grams of MDMA, and additional M30 pills.

Criminal Records and Charges

It turns out that Johnson is not a stranger to run-ins with the law—he’s a convicted felon from Fayette County. What’s more, in a classic case of trying to dodge the law, he allegedly gave officers a fake name, date of birth, and social security number. Johnson is now facing a laundry list of charges that includes multiple counts of felon possession of handguns, possession of marijuana, cocaine, meth, and more. He is currently held in the Metro Jail with a bond set at $102,000.

Meanwhile, Williams, who has his own criminal history with a conviction for auto burglary in Memphis, faces similar charges, including two counts of felon possession of firearms and possession of controlled substances. His bond is set at $101,000. Both men are scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, October 17.
