Nashville, Tenn. – In what has become a heartbreaking case that has reverberated through our community, a deadly hit-and-run crash on Nolensville Pike has led to significant developments involving the suspect’s family. The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has reported that Orlin Argueta-Zuniga, a 29-year-old man, was arrested on Wednesday evening after he admitted to helping his uncle, Walter Daneris Zuniga, cross the U.S. border.
The investigation picked up steam after Walter Daneris Zuniga, a 39-year-old native of Honduras, was identified as the driver of a red Nissan Sentra that struck two vulnerable individuals: 10-year-old Emily Sanchez-Ramirez and her mother, 28-year-old Laura Ramirez-Gonzalez. This tragic event unfolded as the mother and daughter were riding an electric scooter, heading towards Paragon Mills Road, when the accident occurred.
Emily Sanchez-Ramirez was rushed to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where medical professionals determined she sustained critical injuries. Her mother, Laura Ramirez-Gonzalez, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) with injuries that, while serious, were thankfully not life-threatening. As of the latest updates, Ramirez-Gonzalez remains stable at VUMC, which provides some relief amidst this challenging situation.
Orlin Argueta-Zuniga’s cooperation with investigators came as a significant development in this case. By voluntarily meeting with the MNPD, he admitted to assisting his uncle in evading justice. He revealed that Zuniga had concealed the very vehicle involved in the fatal crash at their residence on Radnor Street. Reports indicate that Walter Daneris Zuniga made out his final check to his nephew, who drove him to Atlanta, withdrew the funds, and subsequently purchased a bus ticket to Texas. His intended destination? Mexico, from where he aimed to ultimately return to Honduras.
With charges of accessory after the fact and false reporting to obstruct or hinder an investigation on his record, Argueta-Zuniga currently remains in custody with a bond set at $7,500. Meanwhile, police are actively working to locate his uncle, Zuniga, in order to bring him back to the U.S. for questioning and potential charges stemming from this tragic event.
The impact of this incident has sent shockwaves throughout Nashville. Residents are voicing their concerns over road safety, especially for families using scooters and bicycles in busy areas. Many are rallying together to push for enhanced safety measures and road awareness campaigns to help prevent future tragedies from occurring.
As the investigation continues, the community is left with questions and a desire for justice. Families and friends of the victims are demanding accountability, not only for the actions of Walter Daneris Zuniga but also for anyone who aids in evading justice for such catastrophic incidents.
In a world where moments can change lives forever, let’s hope that this heartbreaking case ends with justice for Emily and Laura, allowing Nashville’s community to heal and move forward stronger and more united.
As new developments arise, expect updates on this ongoing investigation. Our thoughts continue to be with the families affected by this tragedy.
