Nashville, Tennessee — A man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into the wrong house and threatening residents with a firearm in a bizarre case that police describe as a “case of mistaken identity.” The incident has left the neighborhood in shock and raised questions about home security.
According to reports, the incident occurred on July 25 when 27-year-old James Briggs forcibly entered a home on Sylvan Street around 1:30 a.m. Police say he removed an air conditioning unit from the window to gain access to the residence.
Once inside, things took a dangerous turn. Briggs reportedly began firing a gun inside the home and aimed it at one of the residents. However, after realizing he was in the wrong house, he yelled out the window to a second suspect, reportedly saying, “wrong house, wrong house.” This revelation came after the victim mentioned that their family, including four grandchildren, were present in another room.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire. The swift actions of the victims in conveying their situation may have prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
Following a month-long search, detectives from the Metro Nashville Police Department apprehended Briggs on the night of Wednesday, August 28. His arrest took place off South Street just hours after he was placed on the department’s “Top 10 Most Wanted” list.
Briggs has been charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, felon in possession of a weapon, and six counts of reckless endangerment. He was booked into the Davidson County Jail, where he currently remains on a bond set at $195,000.
As the investigation continues, authorities are still searching for 33-year-old Elijah Kodjo, identified as the second suspect involved in the incident. Kodjo has outstanding warrants related to aggravated burglary and aggravated assault.
Authorities are urging anyone who has information about Kodjo’s whereabouts to come forward and assist with the investigation. Residents are reminded that they can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
This incident has raised concerns about safety in Nashville neighborhoods. Local residents are feeling unsettled after hearing about a home invasion that involved firearms and the potential for serious harm.
In light of this event, home security experts recommend taking precautions like installing security cameras, proper lighting outside, and ensuring that all entry points are secure. Community vigilance is vital, and residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police.
Residents have expressed their relief at the quick response from law enforcement, which has been commended for its focus on apprehending dangerous suspects. The enhanced attention to community safety is part of the ongoing effort by local police to keep neighborhoods secure.
Briggs’s arrest marks a small victory for authorities, who have seen at least 130 fugitives taken into custody since the launch of the “Most Wanted” program in October 2022. This initiative relies heavily on tips from the public, which has proven to be a valuable resource in solving cases and apprehending offenders.
The recent break-in incident in Nashville highlights the importance of community awareness and safety. While the police continue to pursue the second suspect, the story serves as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and proactive about protecting their homes and families. By working together and keeping communication open, Nashville residents can help foster a safer environment for everyone.
