Weekly Mass and Breakfast Empower Nashville’s Homeless Population
NASHVILLE, TENN.
In the face of mounting summer heat and the daily struggles that come with homelessness, a beacon of hope shines for Nashville’s homeless population every Sunday. This light takes the form of a church service and a warm, catered breakfast, courtesy of Jesus Provisions Ministries.
Decades of Dedication
This community service endeavor, propelling those experiencing homelessness toward a better future, is the brainchild of Pastor Steve Wilson and Kerry Wilson. Initiating their noble mission over a decade ago at the Nashville Rescue Mission, the Wilsons have since seen their efforts make significant strides in the lives of the people they serve.
“We have some [people] that for sure we know we have impacted, but then we will have some come a couple of years later and say ‘The reason you haven’t seen us is we’ve been off the streets because you were able to get us our social security card, or our birth certificate…or we were able to get a job and now we have housing'”, Kerry Wilson revealed.
Sustaining The Initiative
Undoubtedly, the magnitude of this initiative’s impact would be impossible to maintain without the generous donations and support from the community. Multiple avenues for donations, such as online giving, KrogersGives, and contributions of non-perishable foods or grocery gift cards, ensure that this ministry continues to flourish.
A Sunday Morning Experience
Every Sunday sees between 200 to 300 people gathered at legislative plaza from 8:30 a.m. onwards. Volunteers are on hand to serve well-balanced hot meals, and people are welcome to fill up their bags with snacks for later use. Donated clothing is available and on certain days, haircuts are offered free of charge.
However, providing sustenance and basic needs fulfillment are not the sole objectives of these Sunday mornings. There is a concentrated effort on engaging in meaningful conversations and establishing genuine connections with the people present.
“We want to be able to go back during the week and talk about ‘John Smith’s’ life. We want to know what’s going on with him, where can we fill in a gap,” Wilson explained.
The Ripple Effect of Kindness
Simple gestures can generate meaningful change. And this initiative is living proof. What may initially seem like a modest effort in providing a meal or facilitating a group worship session has made significant contributions in helping empower individuals to turn their lives around.

Jesus Provisions Ministries’ mission and success stories are just one thread in the broader tapestry of efforts to combat homelessness in Nashville. Though the road may be challenging, the effect of a continuous sequence of small efforts can be transformative. Ultimately, this persistent endeavor aims not only to nourish the body but also to empower the spirit and instill the belief that change is possible.
