Nashville faces hazardous road conditions following an overnight freeze, resulting in multiple accidents. Motorists are advised to reconsider travel plans as a winter storm approaches. The Nashville Department of Transportation is prepared with 40 snowplow trucks ready for action to keep the roads safe. Travelers are urged to check the weather and stay safe amid freezing temperatures and the risk of black ice.
The stunning city of Nashville is waking up to some serious iciness following a night of freezing temperatures. Road conditions are becoming a bit of a headache for motorists as icy patches resulted in several accidents Saturday morning. So, if you’re planning to hit the road, it might be time to think twice!
It all started bright and early when the first wreck was reported on Interstate 65 South at around 4:36 a.m. Near mile marker 89, a semi-truck met its match against an ice patch and ended up jackknifing. This caused the right shoulder to be blocked, making it difficult for other vehicles to maneuver safely. The situation didn’t get any better nearby, where another car was spotted stranded at the I-24 junction. As more drivers attempted to navigate around the abandoned vehicle, we can only imagine the chaos that unfolded with more cars slipping and skidding!
The morning continued to unfold with a further crash on the Interstate 440 Eastbound exit ramp. A pickup truck rolled over at around 6:32 a.m., adding to the rising number of accidents caused by the slick roads. Clearly, snow and ice are not Nashville’s best friends this season.
Travel in the Nashville area is expected to be significantly affected on Friday as a major winter storm is gearing up to hit Middle Tennessee. Weather experts are forecasting that most areas will be receiving between four to eight inches of snow. Given the pending storm, both federal and state agencies are urging folks to reconsider travel plans for Friday, warning of “very difficult” travel conditions.
As the snow is predicted to start moving out by Friday night, the impact on travel may continue well into Saturday, leaving some people wondering when life will return to normal. Not to mention, after the snow melts, the freezing weekend temperatures are expected to cause any melted snow to re-freeze overnight, creating dangerously slick black ice on roads, especially the secondary ones. Talk about a winter wonderland gone wrong!
In preparation for the storm, the Nashville Department of Transportation was proactive and treated roads on Thursday. A dedicated crew will be on standby around the clock, working in 12-hour shifts to salt and plow the roads throughout the wintery event. With 40 snowplow trucks ready to roll, the city is better prepared than ever to tackle the wintry challenges ahead.
Not to be outdone, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) also got ahead of the weather by brining interstates and other vulnerable areas starting Wednesday. They’re even planning on extending HELP routes on major highways, emphasizing the importance of caution for any travelers who need to be out during such conditions.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) is stepping in to remind drivers that it’s better to stay home if the conditions worsen. For those who must venture out, being prepared is now a top priority. It’s essential to check your vehicle, carry necessary supplies, and stay informed on the weather situation.
The National Weather Service has issued a stern warning that even a thin layer of ice can create perilous road hazards, especially when freeze rain is involved. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed that everyone stays safe and sound during this chilly stretch!
So, Nashville, remember to keep an eye on the forecast, stay informed, and take care on those slippery roads. Winter may be beautiful, but it sure does come with its challenges!
