Library Card Celebration

Nashville Celebrates National Library Card Sign-Up Month

Hey Nashville! Do you know what time of year it is? That’s right; it’s September, and that means it’s time to celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month! This month-long celebration encourages everyone to grab a library card and discover the fantastic resources that Nashville’s public libraries have to offer. Can you believe that your library card opens the door to over 1.5 million books and materials? Talk about a treasure trove of knowledge!

What’s the Theme?

Each September, libraries around the country come together to highlight all the great things a library card can provide. This year’s theme is “Libraries: More Than Meets the Eye.” The American Library Association reminds us that whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills or find your next great read, a library card is your golden ticket to a plethora of resources. So, why not take a little time this month to visit your local library and sign up for your very own card?

A Magical Passport

Vice Mayor Angie Henderson told us, “I want to encourage and remind Nashvillians that your library card is a magical passport to all the resources of our 20 branch libraries across the city and online.” She emphasizes that no matter your age, having and using that special passport is essential! And the best part? It’s free for all residents!

But wait, there’s more! If you don’t live in Davidson County, you can still join the fun. Those in the library’s service area can get a free card for physical items, while for just a small fee of $10 a year, you can unlock access to online items as well. All you need is a picture ID and proof of residency.

Explore New Horizons

Libraries are full of endless resources just waiting for you! Metro Councilwoman Brenda Gadd, who chairs the Arts, Parks, Libraries, and Entertain Committee, adds, “They’re all about pushing you to explore something new and grow from it. So why wait? Take the leap, try something new, and get your library card this month!”

What Can You Find?

From millions of physical and digital books to e-books, audiobooks, movies, and music, your library card allows you to dive into a world of entertainment and learning experiences. And it doesn’t stop there! You can also borrow a variety of “non-traditional” items, like blood pressure monitors, board games, and even art!

Yes, you heard that right! Through the Metro Arts Lending Library Collection, you can borrow local artworks for up to three months. This initiative, which started in December 2023, includes a stunning selection of framed paintings, photographs, and mixed media from talented Nashville artists. You can visit the Donelson, Madison, and Southeast branches to pick up your chosen artwork. Unfortunately, art cannot be delivered to other branches, so you will need to make the trip to one of these locations!

The Joy of Access

Nashville Public Library Interim Director Terri Luke shared her thoughts: “Free access to quality books and materials makes a difference in the community. Our customers use the NPL collection to explore new ideas, learn, be entertained and find inspiration.” It’s heartwarming to see folks of all ages and backgrounds taking advantage of what the collection has to offer.

Educational Opportunities

Library customers are in for a treat! You can borrow up to 100 items at a time and even check out new best-selling titles without facing any wait, thanks to the NPL’s Lucky Day collection. If you’re a Metro Nashville Public School student or educator, you’re in luck! You already have a library card through the Limitless Libraries lending partnership, allowing you to check out items online and receive deliveries right on campus.

Get Ready to Discover!

So what are you waiting for? Head to your local library this September, grab your library card, and start exploring everything Nashville’s libraries have to offer! Your adventure awaits!
