Nashville Secrets: The Ghost of Opryland USA

Nashville, Tennessee—a city known for its vibrant music scene, delicious food, and rich southern history. But did you know that beneath the surface of this lively metropolis lies a tale of the paranormal? It’s a story that takes us back to the days of Opryland USA, a once-thriving theme park that brought joy to countless families and adventure seekers until it closed its gates for good in 1999.

The Land of Dreams

Opryland USA, which first opened in 1972, was more than just a place to ride roller coasters and watch live shows. It was an enchanting escape that sparked memories for those who visited. While guests were busy enjoying the many attractions, little did they know that they might also be sharing the park with a friendly but mysterious presence. According to Allen Sircy, the author of “Southern Ghost Stories: Opryland,” the spirit haunting the grounds is none other than Mary Louise Bransford McGavock—a name that may not ring a bell, but her story surely will.

A Legacy Unfulfilled

Mary Louise McGavock, who passed away in 1965, was a remarkable woman who left behind a dream for her beloved land. After her death, she intended for her property to be transformed into either an orphanage or a school, but the universe had other plans in mind. Shortly thereafter, developers arrived, and the picturesque theme park became a reality, ultimately changing the landscape forever.

Spooktacular Encounters

It didn’t take long before whispers began to circulate among park employees and visitors—Mary’s spirit had lingered, not content to leave her beloved land unguarded. Sircy recounts that “as soon as Opryland got up and running, reports of sightings started rolling in. People claimed they saw an elderly lady wandering around the park at night.” Imagine riding a thrilling coaster and suddenly spotting an old woman loitering near the gazebo! For many, the experience was equal parts creepy and fascinating.

From Park to Mall

Fast forward to 2000, when Opryland stood empty, and the property was reborn as Opry Mills Mall. Guess who decided to stick around? That’s right! The ghost of Mary McGavock continued her spectral journey. Employees at the mall began to experience the same strange occurrences. With things occasionally jumping off shelves and unexpected noises echoing through the shopping center, it became clear that Mary had followed her old stomping ground. “People say that when they arrive in the morning, items are mysteriously scattered across the floor or misplaced, much like the bustling days of Opryland,” Sircy adds.

Connecting with History

Curious about Mary and her spooky saga? If you’re itching to learn more about the eerie experiences surrounding Opryland and Opry Mills, don’t miss picking up a copy of Sircy’s book—it’s available online and promises to take you on a thrilling ride through Nashville’s ghostly past.

Are You Brave Enough?

So the next time you find yourself shopping at Opry Mills or simply reminiscing about the good old days at Opryland USA, remember to keep an eye out for the ghost of Mary Louise McGavock. Who knows? You might even glimpse her wandering the stores or perhaps hear an unexplained rustle—a playful reminder of Nashville’s fascinating history and the legacy that continues even to this day.
