The Metro Nashville Board of Education has made a heartwarming decision to rename Brick Church Middle School to Richard H. Dinkins Middle School. This decision reflects the board’s recognition of the profound impact Judge Dinkins had on our community and his significant contributions to civil rights and education in Nashville. The announcement was made during a recent meeting, where the presence of Judge Dinkins’ family added a lovely touch to the occasion.
Judge Richard H. Dinkins, who sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 71, has left a lasting legacy. He is remembered as a trailblazer in the field of education and an ardent advocate for civil rights. Many people in Nashville will fondly remember him as the lead attorney behind a crucial desegregation case that transformed Metro Nashville Public Schools, which wrapped up in 1998. His legal journey didn’t stop there—he went on to become the very first Black judge on the Tennessee Court of Appeals, serving from 2008 until he retired just last year in 2022. Before that, he made significant contributions as the chancellor of Davidson County Chancery Court between 2003 and 2008.
Dinkins wasn’t just a judge; he was an inspiring advocate for the community. His work with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund showcased his commitment to fighting for equity and justice. Those who knew him understand that naming a school in his honor aligns perfectly with his dedication to providing all students with fair access to high-quality education.
So when does this exciting name change happen? The renaming of Brick Church Middle School to Richard H. Dinkins Middle School will officially take place at the beginning of the 2025-26 school year. This middle school is part of the vibrant Whites Creek Cluster. It’s worth noting that this school transitioned back to being a district-run establishment after operating as a charter school from 2024. This exciting change marks a period of growth and opportunity for students in our community.
Currently, Richard H. Dinkins Middle School boasts an impressive student population, where around 80% identifies as Black. This fact alone highlights the school’s critical role in the local community. In addition to its new name and focus on equality, the school has also been designated as an early college magnet school, opening up even more pathways for student success!
But that’s not all; even more impactful developments are on the horizon. The Judge Dinkins Educational Center is set to open its doors in the fall of 2024. This center will focus on providing vocational training for youth who are involved with the juvenile justice system. By creating opportunities for education and personal growth, this center embodies the spirit of Judge Dinkins and his commitment to uplifting the community.
Join us in celebrating this significant change and honor the incredible legacy of Judge Richard H. Dinkins. With this new name comes a renewed focus on the values he represented: equity, justice, and a future where every student has the opportunity to thrive. We can’t wait for the day that Richard H.
