Nashville, Tenn. is bracing for the colder months, and with the prospect of early snowfall looming, residents are starting to feel a bit anxious. The city’s snow removal team, however, is not entirely ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store. According to recent findings, Nashville may not have as many snow plows as officials had hoped, leaving some locals wondering if history might repeat itself.
Local resident Ramona Sweatt expressed her feelings about the winter season, saying, “Sometimes it is just beautiful. Other times, it will turn into a storm.” One of those storms happened in January, when a substantial snow blanketed the city, leaving some folks stuck in their neighborhoods for a week. When asked if she thought the city had enough snow plows during that storm, Sweatt candidly replied, “I don’t think so.”
Our investigation revealed that Nashville was supposed to receive 17 new snow plows well before the winter storms hit last year. Unfortunately, those plows were ordered two years ago but didn’t reach the city until the spring of this year. The delay was attributed to supply chain issues, a predicament many have faced across different industries.
While waiting for that initial order, the city decided to order an additional 20 snow plows from the same vendor, who has yet to fulfill that order. The previous order for the 20 was placed in June 2023, and although City officials confirmed that the order was delayed, they assured the public that the plows would arrive by the end of October at the latest. Unfortunately, as of now, only two of those 20 new plows have shown up in Nashville.
The Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT) has said that the ongoing delay for the new plows is still due to issues within the heavy equipment industry overall. They now expect deliveries within the next couple of months as winter approaches. Despite this setback, the city claims that they currently have more snow plows ready for action than at any point last winter.
When all new snow plows finally arrive, Nashville will boast a total of 37 snow plows in its fleet, in addition to 30 existing plows that NDOT aims to retire. That’s a lot of heavy machinery to tackle those pesky winter storms! We reached out for comments but have yet to hear back from the vendor involved in these orders.
City leaders are taking these matters seriously. Representatives from the mayor’s office mentioned that Mayor O’Connell initiated several changes following the significant winter storm last season. NDOT now has a clearer strategy with specific primary, secondary, and post-secondary routes to ensure a greater number of streets get plowed promptly. Spokesperson Alex Apple emphasized that thanks to the trucks that have already arrived, there is a greater number available as we enter this winter compared to last year. This planning aims to make sure that disruptions are minimized during snow events.
Nashville residents like Sweatt can only hope for the best as winter approaches. “We need those snow plows,” she said, reflecting the sentiment of many in the community. With anticipation building in the air, it seems the entire city is crossing its fingers and hoping for a smoother sailing into the winter season.
