Nashville, brace yourself! A major winter storm has swept through Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky, leaving us with significant snowfall and a myriad of travel disruptions. As of Friday, January 10, the region is under a Winter Storm Warning with heavy snow accumulating rapidly throughout the day.
If you thought we’d seen it all, the weather decided otherwise! Nashville International Airport has recorded a staggering 3.9 inches of snowfall so far, smashing the previous record of 3.0 inches that has stood since 1895. With accumulations still coming in, many locals are feeling the full impact of the winter wonderland around them.
In light of the adverse conditions, Nashville’s emergency overflow shelters are stepping up to provide warmth and safety to the homeless community during this snowstorm. The shelters will be open from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. from Friday through Sunday, with a cleanup break in the middle of the day. The partnership between Nashville Rescue Mission and Room In The Inn ensures that daytime shelter is available until 3 p.m., after which guests will transition to the overflow shelter. The Wilson County Fairgrounds has also opened a shelter to ensure that everyone has access to food and warmth.
With the snowfall, roads have become treacherous. City officials are urging residents to exercise caution while driving—especially since many neighborhood streets remain slippery and hazardous. In fact, local roads have been the scene of multiple accidents, including one significant crash on Interstate 65. And while some major roads are reported to be in better condition, it’s wise to avoid unnecessary travel if you can.
In response to the winter storm, several school districts in Middle Tennessee have canceled classes for Thursday, and Governor Bill Lee has declared a state of emergency for the area. With forecasts initially predicting 6-8 inches of snow, those figures have been reassessed to a range of 3-6 inches with some pockets reportedly receiving up to 8 inches. Davidson and Rutherford Counties noted three inches of snow, while Wilson County saw around four inches.
The Nashville Department of Transportation has mobilized its fleet of 40 snowplows, aiming to tackle nearly 2,500 miles of priority routes across the city. Although public transportation is limited, dedicated local volunteering efforts continue to help those seeking shelter and other resources.
