Nashville, Tenn. – A concerning trend is on the rise, not just in Tennessee but across the nation. In just one year, the number of antisemitic incidents has skyrocketed by an alarming 140 percent, according to reports from the Anti-Defamation League. To combat this dark wave, the city has seen multiple marches by neo-Nazi groups, raising serious concerns and prompting local leaders to take action. However, one nonprofit organization has decided to tackle the issue head-on through a creative and engaging initiative—a series of bright billboards aiming to raise awareness and spark conversations within the community.
JewBelong, which is dedicated to fighting antisemitism and making Judaism more accessible, has placed three eye-catching billboards around Nashville. The billboards are designed with striking pink and white colors, boldly proclaiming: ‘Standing against antisemitism is standing with America.’ Archie Gottesman, one of the co-founders of JewBelong, expresses that the goal behind these billboards is straightforward: “What we want people to do is notice it.” The organization believes that if people can see these messages, it will help initiate important conversations about antisemitism—an issue that many may not be fully aware of.
Launched on September 16 and set to remain until September 29, these billboards have a clear mission. “Most people aren’t antisemitic,” Gottesman asserts, “but they don’t know that it is a problem.” By placing these bold messages in public view, JewBelong hopes to enlighten the community about the prevalence of antisemitism and the importance of standing against it.
The billboards unveil just as Nashville’s Metro City leaders are moving to address rising political tensions following recent incidents of hate. Mayor Freddie O’Connell has introduced new legislative measures that balance the protection of First Amendment rights while prioritizing public safety. These measures aim to ensure peaceful public gatherings and safeguard community spaces.
Among the proposed adjustments, the new legislation includes prohibitions on handing out flyers after sunset on personal property, creating buffer zones to help people enter public areas safely, and restrictions on hanging banners that could distract drivers on interstates. There were four legislative options discussed, and all of them passed on the first reading, setting them up for further consideration before the Metro Council.
As the city prepares for the upcoming election season, these efforts reflect a broader commitment to keeping Nashville a safe and welcoming space for everyone. Local leaders recognize the importance of addressing the underlying issues while also protecting freedom of speech. “We want to make sure if folks in the future step out of line in any direction, we’ve got the tools to make sure they don’t do that,” explains a city spokesman.
As Nashville stands firm against antisemitism with these colorful billboards and supportive legislation, it’s a reminder that awareness is the first step towards change. With each conversation sparked by the bright messages, there’s hope for a more inclusive and understanding community. If you’re in Nashville, take a moment to glance at those billboards and reflect on the message they share. Every little bit helps, and every conversation counts.
