The bustling Gulch neighborhood in Nashville, a testament to visionary redevelopment.
Nashville mourns the loss of Steve Turner, who passed away at 77. The developer instrumental in revitalizing the Gulch neighborhood, he leaves behind a lasting legacy of philanthropy and community leadership in Music City.
Nashville has lost a true giant. Steve Turner, the visionary developer of the thriving Gulch neighborhood and a generous philanthropist, passed away on February 11, 2024, at the age of 77. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape the Music City for years to come.
Born in 1947 in quaint Scottsville, Kentucky, Turner journeyed to Nashville, where he graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1969. After spending two decades with Dollar General Corp., a company founded by his father, Cal Turner Sr., he became a significant shareholder alongside his brother, Cal Turner Jr. This experience undoubtedly laid the groundwork for the ambitious projects that were to follow.
In the early 1990s, he and his late wife, Judy, made a bold move by relocating to Second Avenue North. They converted a historic hardware store into residential space, creating the now-loved Butler’s Run. However, Turner’s most remarkable contribution came in 1999 when he established Market Street Enterprises.
The mission was clear: to breathe new life into The Gulch, a once-forgotten area that was home to 60 acres of former rail yards and industrial sites. Thanks to Turner’s vision, The Gulch underwent an incredible transformation into a bustling urban neighborhood that now boasts a mix of hospitality, retail, office, and residential properties. This area is not just a place to live; it has become a destination!
Turner was more than just a developer; he was a beloved figure who had a genuine passion for Nashville. Former Mayor Karl Dean described him as giddy and smiling whenever exciting developments arose in the city. Under his leadership, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum saw tremendous growth. Turner served as chairman and a long-time board member, contributing significantly to the museum’s expansion in 2014, which doubled its size and enhanced its public outreach.
His creativity and business acumen did not go unnoticed. The Hall of Fame’s CEO recognized Turner as a visionary whose influence reached far beyond real estate. He worked closely with various organizations, including the Nashville Symphony Association, the Frist Art Museum, and Cumberland Region Tomorrow, showcasing his commitment to the community.
Turner’s dedication to Nashville earned him numerous accolades including the Joe Kraft Humanitarian Award from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee in 2008 and the title of Nashvillian of the Year by Easter Seals in 2011. His heart was as big as his contributions were vast.
Tragically, Turner is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Judith Payne Turner, and their daughter, Laura Anne Turner. He leaves behind his son, Jay Turner, who currently serves as the CEO of Market Street Enterprises, and his brother, Cal Turner Jr.
A funeral service will be held this Saturday at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Visitation starts at 9 a.m., with services commencing at noon. It’s a moment to celebrate a remarkable life and the significant impact Steve Turner had on Nashville.
As Nashville continues to thrive, we remember that Steve’s influence helped shape its vibrant landscape. From his ambitious redevelopment projects to his philanthropic efforts, his legacy will live on in the hearts of many.
