A Green Hills-based media company, Tenet Media, is under scrutiny following a federal indictment that links it to a covert Russian propaganda effort. Prosecutors argue that the firm has been involved in activities aimed at manipulating American public opinion and sowing discord within the country. Although Tenet Media is not directly named in the indictment, federal authorities refer to it as “U.S. Company-1,” which aligns with the details of the organization based in Nashville.
Founded in January 2022, Tenet Media is registered with a principal office located in Nashville. State records reveal its relationship with Roaming USA Corp., a Brentwood-based entity. According to court documents, Tenet Media was allegedly created by the Russian state-controlled media outlet RT as a clandestine operation to evade sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Tenet Media brands itself as a “network of heterodox commentators” focusing on political and cultural issues. This description closely reflects the language used in the indictment. Prosecutors contend that the company has been instrumental in a scheme that utilized Russian government funding to influence public discourse in the United States.
Two Russian nationals, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, are at the center of the indictment. They face charges of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Both individuals are reportedly employees of RT and remain at large. The indictment alleges that they played significant roles in a $10 million scheme designed to produce and distribute content containing hidden messages from the Russian government.
Prosecutors assert that the funds used in this scheme were funneled to Tenet Media through seven foreign shell entities. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland made a strong statement condemning these actions, asserting that the investigation is ongoing and that federal authorities will not tolerate manipulation of the free exchange of ideas.
Among its noted founders are Lauren Chen, known online as “Roaming Millennial,” and her husband Liam Donovan. Although the indictment refers to them as “Founder-1” and “Founder-2,” their involvement has raised eyebrows given Chen’s prominent right-wing commentary. The indictment suggests that these founders, alongside Kalashnikov and Afanasyeva, were complicit in efforts to mislead influential online commentators and to disseminate Russian propaganda through targeted audiences.
Specifically, the two commentators who were “deceived” in this scheme are widely believed to be Dave Rubin and Tim Pool, based on the audience size outlined in the indictment. Tenet Media’s platform boasts numerous right-wing figures, including podcasters and social media influencers, who advocate for controversial issues such as immigration, diversity, and LGBTQ rights.
In the wake of the indictment, individuals associated with Tenet Media have spoken out, emphasizing their supposed lack of knowledge regarding the funding sources. Prominent figure Benny Johnson released a statement claiming he was unaware of any illicit activities, stating, “We are disturbed by the allegations… and will handle anyone who suggests otherwise.”
Tim Pool expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing that he maintained editorial control over his content and condemned Russia’s actions. Both personalities stressed their stance against any notion of being involved in a propaganda scheme.
This isn’t the first instance of Tennessee being linked to foreign propaganda efforts. Local figures have also previously been implicated in dubious roles concerning Russian elections. The recent revelations concerning Tenet Media have raised concerns among officials regarding the influence of foreign adversaries on domestic discourse.
FBI Director Christopher Wray condemned the covert attempts to manipulate public opinions in the U.S., stating that such actions undermine democracy. He reiterated the commitment of federal authorities to expose and disrupt foreign influence campaigns targeting America.
The fallout from this indictment is palpable across the media landscape, with many questioning the operations of Tenet Media and its influencers. Notably, the company’s office location appears to be listed as a virtual office, indicating a precarious business foundation. Questions remain about what this means for its future and the nature of its content going forward.
As investigations continue and the particulars of the case unfold, the world watches closely, contemplating the far-reaching consequences of these allegations for Tenet Media and U.S. media at large. With the influence of online media growing by the day, the ability to distinguish genuine discourse from manipulative propaganda becomes ever more vital.
