In a recent development, a delegation of lawmakers from Tennessee’s Congressional has sent a letter to US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, expressing their outrage over an incident where an illegal migrant reportedly assaulted a woman in Nashville.
The deportation of the offender, identified by the Metro Police as Nelson Yovani Oritz-Ramirez, from the country was halted due to the “careless and imprudent open border policies”. The lawmakers stated the “despicable incident would never have happened if not for the administration’s reckless and irresponsible open border policies.” They had attempted to express their disapproval towards Mayorkas’ perceived “continued failure to secure our southern border and protect the citizens of our country.”
The incident occurred on May 17, when Nelson Yovani Oritz-Ramirez allegedly attempted to lock himself and a woman in a bathroom at a business in the Gulch. The arrest warrant described the victim’s fear that the suspect would rape her.
This letter also referred to another incident in Franklin where a youth soccer coach, Camilo Campos-Hurtado, was accused of drugging and raping young boys over a span of decades. According to the allegations, he was in possession of false immigration papers and was indicted on federal child sex crimes. The letter read, “If you or this administration actually enforced our immigration laws, these heinous acts would never have taken place.”
Senator Marsha Blackburn, Representative Tim Burchett, Representative Scott DesJarlais, and Representative Chuck Fleischmann, who were signatories of the letter, queried if the DHS was aware that Oritz-Ramirez was in the US illegally. They also wanted to know whether Oritz-Ramirez was issued a Notice to Appear when he illegally entered the US, and if any enforcement actions were initiated against the offender.
The lawmakers’ concerns portrayed the urgent need to fortify the border policy. Their shared sentiments in the letter highlighted the disastrous effects of negligence in enforcing immigration laws. They demanded answers from the department that is responsible for managing immigration and ensuring the safety of the citizens, adding fervor to the already heated debate on border security and immigration policies in the US.
