Nashville has a new champion for change in the community, and her name is Tequila Johnson. Living in Nashville for over 20 years, Tequila has transformed her drive for success into a powerful movement aimed at empowering Black communities across Tennessee. As the co-founder and CEO of The Equity Alliance, she has dedicated her life to raising the voices of those who have been historically marginalized.
Tequila’s story is all about breaking barriers. Growing up in Chattanooga, she faced numerous challenges but always held onto a fierce desire to make a change. When she became the first person in her family to graduate from college, it was more than just a personal achievement; it set a precedent for her entire family. It inspired her to encourage others to chase their dreams and push against the constraints of their environments.
The journey didn’t stop there. Tequila co-founded The Equity Alliance to build Black political power and create opportunities for the community to have a voice. “We’ve knocked on over 250,000 doors and engaged in countless hours of community outreach,” Tequila shared. From voter registration to fighting for environmental justice, her organization’s efforts aim to ensure that Black individuals in Tennessee have the chance to fully participate in democracy and make decisions that impact their lives.
One of the most exciting projects on her agenda is called “Passport to Freedom”. This initiative aims to introduce inner-city children to international travel, allowing them to experience new cultures. “We want to help these kids get passports and provide them with experiences abroad that could change the trajectory of their lives,” she explained. Tequila believes that exposing children to opportunities beyond their immediate environments can spark their dreams and ambitions.
Furthermore, her organization’s “Community Love” program focuses on mutual aid, helping community members meet immediate needs while working towards long-term change. “We’re dedicated to areas like education, rights restoration, and environmental justice,” she emphasized. “Our goal is to empower people and help them thrive.”
After years of tireless work, Tequila has decided to take a sabbatical in 2025. “It’s time for some personal growth and self-discovery. I’m planning to travel internationally — Greece is on my list — and I might even try a dopamine detox retreat,” she shared with excitement. She hopes this time off will recharge her spirit and allow her to return to her work with new insights and perspectives.
Outside of her professional life, Tequila is a true fitness enthusiast. She enjoys powerlifting, which she started back in 2019, as it keeps her grounded. It’s her way to push both her mental and physical limits. But she also loves connecting with friends and exploring the vibrant, diverse culture of Nashville. “I love discovering new places that give you a different glimpse of the city,” she remarked.
Her self-care routine is simple yet fulfilling, including shower steamers, scented candles, and cozy pajamas. “It’s the little things that help me unwind after a busy day,” she said. Lighting a candle and enjoying a calming atmosphere are essential for her to recharge.
With her busy schedule, Tequila still finds time to enjoy great food and company at local spots like the Supper Club on Belcourt. “Not only is the food phenomenal, but the entire experience makes it memorable,” she expressed. Supporting Black-owned businesses that add to Nashville’s diverse tapestry brings her joy.
Tequila has a life philosophy that resonates deeply with her — “Treat relationships like wealth.” She believes that nurturing relationships is essential, much like building a financial portfolio. Cultivating these connections creates a network that fosters resilience and growth.
As she prepares for her sabbatical, Tequila reflects on the power of her work and the connections she has forged. With a heart dedicated to making a difference and a spirit eager for adventure, she stands as a radiant example of how one person can inspire change in their community.
Nashville is fortunate to have Tequila Johnson — an advocate, a leader, and a true representation of what it means to dream big and act courageously.
