In a bid to improve safety measures for its users, global rideshare giant Uber is rolling out a pilot program that will certify passengers with a ‘Verified Badge’. The program, launched in Nashville, TN, will work towards providing an extra layer of security for both its drivers and riders.
The new program is a response to increasing demands for rider verification felt by drivers across the nation. Commencing from Thursday, April 18, Uber will begin reviewing and crosschecking rider account information and details as a part of its new verification scheme.
Riders need not take any additional steps for this verification process. However, they have the option to aid verification by uploading a government-issued ID to the app. Uber has pledged to securely store verification data and encrypt all ID documents uploaded on the platform.
Once a rider is verified, a Blue Check Mark (Verified Badge) will be visible on their profile. Drivers will see this badge when accepting ride requests, giving them the assurance that the passenger has been certified by the system.
While this new measure might raise some eyebrows concerning privacy, Uber guarantees that drivers will only have access to limited personal details about riders. Drivers will only be able to view a rider’s first name, star rating, trip details, and Verification Badge. Last names and phone numbers will not be shared with drivers.
Roger Kaiser, Head of Safety at Uber, commented on the program’s launch. “Strengthening rider verification has been a top request from drivers across the country. This new verification process and verified rider badge provide drivers with additional peace of mind while they are out on the road. We’re committed to making Uber even safer and more trustworthy place to ride and drive, and eagerly anticipate user feedback on this pilot.”
As this new program is rolled out, both riders and drivers in Nashville will be keenly observing its practical implications. If effectively implemented and received positively by users, the system has the potential to reinforce users’ trust in Uber’s commitment to safety, and could possibly be implemented across more cities.
This step comes as a part of Uber’s continuing commitment to enhancing safety for its community. The company has previously taken steps towards improving driver verification and real-time trip monitoring. It now remains to be seen how this latest endeavor impacts Uber’s operations and reputation, and how it contributes to the overall safety of rideshare-based transportation.
