City Leaders Pursue Strict Measures Against Unlicensed Taxi and Rideshare Operators
Nashville Joins Forces to Eliminate Unlawful Transport Practices
City leaders in Nashville, in collaboration with licensed taxi companies have intimated their intent to strictly handle unlicensed taxi and rideshare drivers through the imposition of tighter regulations. Upon the heels of numerous complaints, these officials are determined to dismantle the operations of illegitimate taxi operators who pose as genuine businesses, and subsequently charge exorbitant prices to unsuspecting tourists.
Doug Trimble, President of Yellow Cab Metro, voiced strong concerns about these activities, pointing out the exploitation of tourists and conventioneers in the city. During a meeting with the Transportation Licensing Commission (TLC) on Friday, Trimble expressed the need for stern actions, stating, “They’re just down there picking up our tourism patrons and our conventioneers and committing blatant thievery, and it’s got to stop.”
The Need for Accountability
Trimble added that these rogue drivers evade accountability, which is a matter that needs immediate redressal. A plausible solution, as suggested by him, is to have a Metropolitan policeman or someone from the police department to assist the TLC. By having law enforcement on board, stricter enforcement could be possible, a prospect all attendees agreed was paramount to curb this rising issue.
City Councilman, Jacob Kupin emphasized that the discussion held on Friday was the first amongst many future conversations to address these fraudulent activities. He signaled the likelihood of a public service campaign being launched, which would serve to educate residents and tourists alike on how to best avoid such illegal operators.
Lack of Effective Controls
Despite the gravity of the issue, it was identified that a significant part of the problem resides in the TLC’s inability to perform traffic stops on unlicensed taxi and rideshare drivers, leaving a void in enforcement. In response, Trimble suggested that Metropolitan police engagement could bolster efforts to combat this issue.
All licenced Nashville-based taxi companies adhere to specific operational standards that include assurance of top light installation on their cabs, display of decal on the vehicles, functioning fare meters, with driver’s permits visible on the dashboard.
In light of the recent developments, city officials are making a case for stronger policies and law enforcement involvement to clamp down on unlicensed drivers. Through collective efforts, they hope to enhance the safety, authenticity, and overall quality of taxi and rideshare services in the city.
