Vanderbilt baseball team practices amidst significant changes in roster and coaching staff.
Vanderbilt baseball is undergoing significant changes, with standout freshman Camden Kozeal entering the transfer portal, joining teammates Logan Poteet and Matt Ossenfort. Additionally, head coach Tim Corbin has parted ways with assistant coaches Mike Baxter and Tyler Shewmaker following a disappointing season. While the Commodores showed promise with a recent 3-2 record, these shifts in player and coaching staff are creating a pivotal moment for the program’s future. Fans are optimistic as they look forward to upcoming games.
Hey, Vanderbilt fans! It’s been a whirlwind of a week for Vanderbilt baseball here in Nashville. If you’ve been following the team, you know that major changes are afoot. The first big news is that freshman standout Camden Kozeal has entered the transfer portal. Yes, you heard it right! The talented infielder from Nebraska, who had quite the debut season, is looking for a new home after just one year with the Commodores.
In his freshman campaign, Kozeal didn’t just blend in; he stood out! He played in 43 games, starting 35 of them. He managed to hit five home runs and drove in 28 RBIs, maintaining a solid batting average of .284. You have to admit, that’s a strong start for any freshman, especially in one of the toughest divisions in college baseball. Back in March, Kozeal’s performance was so stellar that he earned the title of SEC Freshman of the Week after racking up 14 hits—the highest record in all of Division I for that week!
To top it off, he was the 2023 Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year and even made it to the first team of the Collegiate Baseball Preseason High School All-America list. Unfortunately, he’s not the only one from his team entering the portal; he’ll be joining catcher Logan Poteet and first baseman Matt Ossenfort, both of whom also decided to explore their options.
Now, it’s not just the players making moves; changes on the coaching staff are shaking things up too. Head coach Tim Corbin has decided to part ways with assistant coaches Mike Baxter and Tyler Shewmaker. This decision comes on the heels of a disappointing season where the team exited the NCAA Tournament early for the third consecutive year. They faced Coastal Carolina in the Clemson Regional and, alas, suffered a daunting 13-3 loss.
Mike Baxter had been the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator since 2018. Under his watch, the Commodores found themselves stuck in the middle of the pack in most hitting stats this past year. As a part of the coaching staff, he played a role in Vanderbilt’s celebrated 2019 national championship that remains a highlight in college baseball history. Meanwhile, Tyler Shewmaker, who specialized in coaching catchers, only joined the team in 2022, having previously made a mark at Campbell University.
Despite the ups and downs, the Commodores showed some potential in their recent games, finishing the last week with a 3-2 record. They even managed to win two out of three games against Gonzaga, which certainly lifted team spirits! With an overall record of 5-3 by February 26, 2024, things are starting to look promising. Fans, mark your calendars because the upcoming games against Indiana State, Evansville, Louisiana, Houston, and Texas at Minute Maid Park in Houston are sure to bring some excitement.
It’s an intriguing time to be a Commodore fan, with both current players and coaches making impactful decisions that could change the course of the upcoming seasons. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that these moves pay off and bring the program back to its winning ways!
